I really am sick of people all over the internet saying That a film is “pandering” the second there is a woman/POC/LGBTQ as a lead. the most recent example is Eternals, someone said“We don't want diversity for the sake of diversity or to check boxes, we want well written and compelling characters of a variety of backgrounds that make sense and are interesting and dynamic.” I see where they’re coming from but why does every character that isn’t a cis white man have to be extremely interesting? not every film that has a poc/woman/lgbt has to be amazingly in depth, sometimes having the character be gay is just because they want them to be. There doesn’t have to be a reason for it. People say it’s “pandering” but poc/gay people barely get any representation in blockbusters, especially as the main characters. Using these peoples thought process against them, is it not pandering if they’re always making white men as the leads for films when its disproportionate to the population? No. We wouldn’t say that because we don’t care if there’s another white cis man in the main role, so why do these people care about us being front and center in blockbuster movies?another example is the Woman empowerment moment in Avengers Endgame. yes it doesn’t make much sense logistically, but the way people talk about that scene it’s as if it killed their family. it a harmless scene where they bring all the women together and honestly I don’t mind it. You know why? Because there was a young girl next to me in the cinema and she was getting so happt and started poking at me. That’s what these scenes mean to some people. They’re not meant for reddit/youtubes demographic, it’s meant for the little girls who don’t see to many of themselves as the main roles in superhero films. that’s what it means to have a poc or lgbtq person as the lead or in a big movie, people get to see themselves in these roles and have someone to look up to.sorry for the long rant. It’s just being a poc whose part of the LGBTQ community, Its weird watching people finding the wrong in having a woman/lgbtq/poc In a film than the rights, via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3F4uwke
