I recently re-watched "Hereditary" and I thought it was even better than 1st time.

Wow. A lot better this time. The cinematography is pretty amazing. The soundtrack is disturbing. All of the performances were pretty great, especially Toni Collete. She was amazing and so many seem to agree that she is the one who gives the best performance in the film. The movie was also incredibly disturbing and I say this as someone who very rarely gets disturbed by an horror film. I wasn't very scared or anything but I did feel uncomfortable at times and that's quite the achievement. The decapitation scene and the mother realizing her death was very intense and emotional to a very high extent. I thought almost everything about the film was amazingly well-done. My only problem is the ending. I am conflicted with it because of how it may cancel all the mental illness and dark family drama in the film by later turning it into a paranormal festival where the source to all problems was that the grandma belonged to a weird ass cult and that's about it. I honestly really wanted to believe that it is supposed to be like metaphorical to something like how it relates to how we feel into following the traditions/actions of our relatives or that it was actually an illusion exemplifying the history of mental illness in the family because the idea that it was all because of a cult sounds absurd and feels so limited in its messaging. Honestly, those beliefs for the ending in my mind are what keep everything standing for me. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/37VN2eH

Nobody talks about Drop Dead Gorgeous

This is one of the greatest movies ever made. I first watched it as a child when I was home sick with the flu. For years I thought I had dreamed it. Fortunately our lives have been blessed with this work of art, and I am here to encourage you to give it a chance.Drop Dead Gorgeous came out in 1999 and started Kirsten Dunst, Kirstie Alley, Denise Richards, Britney Murphy, Amy Adams, and Allison Janey. It follows a small-town Minnesotan beauty pageant whose contestants are being killed off one-by-one. It’s a Mockumentary black comedy, and is firmly grounded in late 90s culture. For me, the movie almost seems to play out like a Kurt Vonnegut novel. It follows an interesting and well-intentioned protagonist who rises to the top seemingly by coincidence, even though the odds are constantly stacked against her. The movie follows people who scheme, cheat, and even murder in order to achieve the smallest amount of fame. It perfectly encapsulates all of the negative qualities of small towns, especially those in religious areas. It’s also just a fucking hilarious movie. The amount of tiny details is honestly amazing and makes for very enjoyable rewatches. I just finished watching it for the fifth time last night. It’s amazing how everyone feels genuinely into their roles. To this day the film contains my favorite performances of both Kirstie Alley and Denise Richards.I am a poor writer, and I don’t feel like I would do the comedic aspects of this film any justice by trying to describe them. Instead, here’s a link to one of my favorite scenes - Rebecca’s Talenthttps://youtu.be/kBKQL6f5sec via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2rKjVKJ

Christmas prince, christmas chronicles, merry xmas etc . They have a million of them. Vanessa Hudgens would play the Nick Fury roll since I think her by herself is in like 3 of them. I think they already self reference each other in small ways, like being on screens in the background. It's time to take it to the next level. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/34wvbZT

I found it enjoyable. I’m binging the entire Star Wars saga and Solo was one of the ones I wasn’t terribly excited for rewatching, but it’s solid. Not amazing. Not great. But solid. Alden Ehrenreich sold me on him playing Han Solo and while some of the stuff (like the Solo name) was dumb it worked. Woody Harrelson did a pretty solid job and Emilia Clarke rounded out a solid cast. What did you guys think? via /r/movies https://ift.tt/37SkliY

Morally good characters are more interesting than bad ones

Am I the only one who doesn't find bad characters interesting?I'm not interested in sociopaths or guys who lose their humanity as the film progresses. I know a ton of shitty people in real life just like this. The world is full of cunts. There's so many reasons to be a shitty person tbh. What interests me are the morally good people that society deems "boring", likely because it makes them feel insecure about themselves. Characters like Rocky Balboa for example, people who have every reason to be shitty because of the people and circumstances/world around them but choose not to, and become good people.Whenever I meet a genuinely good person in real life, and I find out they went through some trauma and had bad experiences, I'm always amazed. They have every reason to not be kind but choose to be. IMO this is why a Superman film done right could work so well.I've had enough of people saying morally grey and bad characters are more "complex". As I get older, I'm beginning to realise that good and genuinely positive people (not the fake types) are actually more complex....the world is full of reasons not to be good. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2R1CSDz

No trailer watched = Better movie experience

It’s like reading a book. The author slowly builds and introduces the synopsis of the story by periodically introducing characters, and detailing the setting. You really don’t fully understand what’s going on in a lengthy novel till 80-100 pages in.A trailer shows you key scenes right away to pull you in which ruins the mystery of the story the author is trying to build. This might be nostalgia because I watched these films in middle school, but the most memorable movie experience at the theater was Inception (opening night, gasping crowd), and Drive. Didn’t know at all what the films where about, just that they were good. Same with Pulp Fiction (not In theaters unfortunately)Thank you guys for recommending movies with out me having to watch a trailer. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2Y1JnYe

Ana de Armas puts on one of the best performances of the year in Knives Out

I hadn't seen anything about this movie, so I didn't know anything besides how stacked the cast was but by far the best and one of the best of the year was Ana de Armas. I think she truly deserves an Oscar nom because she blew this out of the water and was just phenomenal. It seems that there are the 4 "major" female leads this year Scarlett, Renee, Charlize, and Saoirse, and I feel like Ana de Armas needs to be that 5th. Once she became the main character of the movie surrounded by these caricatures I think she was just perfect in her role and showed the perfect amounts of emotion and stress throughout the entire movie. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/34zsNSh

Which director(s) had the best output this decade in your opinion?

I ask this as a means of reworking the cliche: "What are the X best films of the decade?" I also generally prefer to binge a single director's filmography if I like their style, so this provides me with good recommendations in that format. To answer my own question in so many words- Denis Villeneuve. To direct 6 movies in a single decade (technically in only 7 years) is an achievement in of itself, however, for each of those films to be arguably standouts of the decade, is a truly remarkable accomplishment. His best work of the decade imo, Sicario, is the finest example of a crime thriller I have seen. Absolutely fucking riveting. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/33uZ0Zl

The 2019 Oscar for Best Supporting Actor is going to be an all time stacked race.

Brad Pitt: Once Upon A Time In HollywoodAl Pacino: The IrishmanTom Hanks: A Beautiful Day in the NeighborhoodWillem Dafoe: The LighthouseJoe Pesci: The IrishmanJamie Foxx: Just MercyAnthony Hopkins: The Two PopesSterling K. Brown: WavesSong Kang-ho: ParasiteShia LaBeouf: Honey BoyI mean, the names are just absurd: the three front-runners Pacino, Pitt, Hanks alone are three huge legendary names for a supporting actor category. So what's your thoughts on the Best Supporting Actor race? Is it an all-timer? Who will be nominated, who should win?It seems like Pitt and Pacino are the head of the pack and that Pitt has a slight edge over Pacino right now.Personally, my choice would be Pacino. I thought he was spectacular. Pitt was great as well, but I'd rank them: 1. Pacino 2. Pesci 3. Dafoe 4. Pitt 5. HanksBut it seems like the consensus is that ultimately Pitt will get it because he's never won one before. To that I reply: which is a greater travesty, the fact that Pitt has zero Oscars for acting or that Pacino only has one Oscar for acting? via /r/movies https://ift.tt/34FFuLq

What movie did a good job of not over-explaining its origin?

I just finished watching It Chapter 2 which was really disappointing compared to the first one. It was either that I thought that children being in danger is a better movie than adults being in danger or that there was just too much talk about the ritual and the origin of pennywise and all of this other stuff that I found boring. I say that because I also found the 2nd part in the tv miniseries to be much more boring than the first one. I also remember being bored about the Japanese horror where it's all about a girl who was wronged or killed suddenly or something like that.I guess my point is that sometimes the less is known, the better. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/33BdJ54

It: Chapter 2 is an awful movie

Holy shit, what happened??? The first movie isn't amazing but it's very entertaining, the 2nd movie is a manic mess of cheap jokes and hamfisted emotional moments. They somehow managed to make James McAvoy terrible and I think him as Bill is perfect casting... Under another writer/director team.Seriously though. This movie is terrible. It feels like a tech demo vaguely masquerading as a Stephen King adaption with all the bizarre transitions and terrible sfx. Wtf is that Mrs Kersh scene lol via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2rzPjvz

Dolemite Is My Name is my favorite film of the year

This was the most entertaining movie of 2019. Eddie Murphy gives a resplendent performance as Rudy Ray Moore, dealing out one-liners and heart-felt moments one after another. The supporting cast, including Wesley Snipes, Mike Epps, Keegan-Michael Key, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Craig Robinson and a sneaky role for Bob Odenkirk, give the film a kinetic, comedic energy and a soul that I haven't felt in any other film of the year. The film is also one of the funniest films of the last five years, and the soundtrack is one that should be looked to as an inspiration when searching for great film soundtracks of the decade. I have seen The Irishman, Joker, and John Wick Chapter 3, but Dolemite is his name, and fucking up motherfuckers is his game. Best movie of the year, IMHO. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/35Ou7kl

With Bond 25: No Time to Die next year, Daniel Craig will not only be the actor longest in character of James Bond (14 years), but also the first to have movies spanning over 3 decades.

Daniel Craig will be 14 years as James Bond, from 2006 to 2020. The second longest a James Bond actor was in the role was Roger Moore from 1973 to 1985 (12 years), despite starring in a total of 7 movies, 2 more than Craig. We're not considering the non official 1983 return of Sean Connery.Craig will also be the first to have James Bond movies spanning over the 3 decades (00s w/ CR & Qos, 10s w/ Skyfall & SPECTRE & 20s NTTD). Connery (60s & 70s), Moore (70s & 80s) & Brosnan (90s & 00s) had movies spanning over two decades, and Lazenby (69) & Dalton (87 & 89) only one.I'd also want to point out that the gap between SPECTRE & NTTD is the biggest gap (5 years) between James Bond movies of the same actor. The only gap that's bigger is the one between Dalton's last (License to Kill 89) and Brosnans first (GoldenEye 95).Another interesting fact is that the 2010s are the first decade in Bond history that only have 2 movies. The 60s had 6, the 70s 5, the 80s 5, the 90s 3 and the 2000s also 3. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2L8phq2

Jupiter Ascending -- what a gorgeous disappointment

I'd given this a pass when it came out due to poor reviews. The wife does like the Wachowskis and wanted to give it a shot. The idea of an otherwise post-scarcity consumer economy turning human beings into the ultimate commodity is quite frightening. They had a great opening premise there. Grafting that onto an inheritance spat brings it back to the conventional tropes of rich people melodrama, which can still be made interesting. But so much falls so short.Jupiter is a cabbage protagonist -- as in she has as much agency as a head of cabbage other characters are fighting for possession of. She effectively contributes nothing to the story. She can't fight, she can't think, she can't take any action to save herself. Her only hope is waiting for others to intervene.I'm sure there are tons of notes in their movie bible but not much made it to the screen which leaves us with little information about how this interstellar society operates. The question I always ask with "life here began out there" stories -- how do you explain the fossil record? Not the greatest of the movie's sins but something that always sticks out to me.Given how masterful and comprehensible the action scenes in the Matrix were (forgetting the sequels), the action scenes in this film were incredibly disappointing because of the CGI overload and shakycam. There's so much going on that the actors are bystanders in their own scenes and there's no sense of place or flow of action, it's just visual noise. It feels like there's a better film in here than the one they actually made. It's a shame this is what we got. It could have been more. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2QZ3B3D

So there have been a few threads already to pick everyone's favourites movies from the 2010's... but I thought we could mix things up and see what other's think what is the worst this decade has to offer?I for instance cannot get over the fact of how awful The Last Airbender... how wrong everything in it was at all levels... of course Fantastic Four was pretty awful too, with a decent enough set up, but a crap ton of executive meddling and one of the worst round of reshoots later, and we got that crap... and Movie 43: who in earth make that crap, I don't know, but I am sure they have a place reserved in hell for themselves...What are yours? via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2OOoXOo

Steve Coogan on Holmes & Watson, which he starred in: "In 20 years' time, when all the dust has settled and people are able to look at that film objectively, they'll still think it's shit."

Tired of “Black pain porn” films. Let’s discuss positive black films and portrayals

I’m writing this after watching the double feature of Queen and Slim and Waves yesterday.Hollywood is churning out “black pain porn.” What is a“black pain porn” film? They are depressing films which usually deal with the same old storyline remixed: black people are dealing with intense poverty/discrimination and/or being killed by cops, or white people, or white cops, and/or being sent to prison. Examples of black pain porn films are: Harriet, Blindspotting, Queen and Slim, Waves, Birth of a Nation, Moonlight, Fruitvale Station, Precious, 12 Years a Slave, etc. Some of those films were beautifully shot and had amazing acting but all did two things for me as a black man: left me feeling depressed and traumatized. I am TIRED OF SEEING BLACK BODIES RIDDLED WITH BULLETS It is not okay.Positive black portrayals: Little, Last Black Man in SF, Black Panther, Love and Basketball, Brown Sugar, The Pursuit of Happiness.I’m done spending money to watch films where I leave it wondering why the world hates me for something I have no control over. So, I want to stop feeding that negativity. Let’s discuss positive films about black people. What did you like about the film? via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2DCiX6l

What movie from the 2010s flew under the radar that is required viewing?

I'd like to make my list by genreHorror- The Void (2016) really good throw back 80s body horror movie with an occult group trying to invade a hospital with some Lovecraft inspired monsters.... Truly a good time for practical effect loving movie goers.Comedy - Popstar: Never stop never stopping (2016), truly some big laughs in this mockumentary of a fictitious pop star and his rise and fall and rise again.Coming of age - Turn me on dammit(2016) Norwegian film that is bitingly fierce and unrelenting with its portrayed lead as she deals with sexual frustrations.Action ~ Dredd(2012) & Upgrade(2018) both are tightly written, well acted and shockingly awesome action films that need more love, I would say Dredd is just a little better by Karl Urban's performance.Drama - Mud (2012) this was in my opinion, the movie Matthew McConaughey deserved an Oscar for, he gives his best performance as a man running away from his past while showing a young boy life lessons. More drama than coming of age. This is truly a must see.Documentary - Tickled(2016)truly a bizarre but very fascinating watch, with a very "you don't know what's coming next" feel. It truly takes some strange turns and in the end. You have very much been on a twisting, funny, scary and humbling rollercoaster.Animation - Storks(2016) a real gem of a picture that isn't talked about much but man oh man was it funny, clever and original. Kids and adults will love. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/33xwuGt

I miss Vangelis movie soundtracks - why has it been so long?

Vangelis was hugely successful with soundtracks in the 80s with Blade Runner and Chariots of Fire, but hasn't done any soundtracks since 2004. He could do eye catching themes as well as subtle background music His synth style seems to have come back into style now and would probably not be considered dated like it was in the 90s and 2000s.Is there a personal reason why he has stopped working on soundtracks? - If so I can't find it. He did a studio album in 2016. Does Hollywood just need reminding about him? via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2XVd1OR

Alright I fucking love The Parent Trap (1998) and I'm not afraid to admit it.

Thanks to Disney+ I got to revisit a childhood favorite of mine as a 23 year old man and LET ME TELL YOU THIS SHIT SLAPS.Right out the gate Lindsay's acting is fucking phenomenal. She does both accents great and when she's the Brit acting as the American I SWEAR to God she's doing a double layer thing where she uses the British inflection but with the American accent like she's actually a British kid doing it. The shit is fucking mind bending.Actually EVERY actor does an INCREDIBLE job. Some of the lines have aged like fucking milk yes, but DUDE, whoever plays the dad's maid lady is fucking KILLER. Every line she delivers is spot on believable. Same with the dad and the mom and everyone. Love this shit.THE MUSIC?? The Beatles, Nat Cole King, other hits, I mean this shit is my jam.Bro wholesome ass story. Like this shit warms my heart. These girls get their parents back together and the whole hotel scenario is just so much fun. I could watch this shit a million times. As a kid I totally had a crush on Lindsay and now I can watch it and look at Maredith and Elizabeth and have an appreciation for the hot ass women (RIP to the Liz actress)Anyway, fuck yeah this movie rips. Watch it. Make your kids watch it. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2qS45xJ
