The Rachel McAdams Time Travel Trilogy is absolutely beautiful.

So she starts with The Time Traveler's Wife which is a very interesting take on involuntary time travel. Next she works with Woody Allen in Midnight in Paris, this is a very great sequel to our first film and maintains her romantic leads inability to control his traveling. in our final installment, About Time her male lead is about to control his movements, and uses his powers to provide her with the best ordinary life he possible can. This is definitely my favorite unintentional trilogy, anyone got some other additions? via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2G9qDBi

I wanted to give a shout out to Anthony Carrigan in Bill and Ted : Face the Music

I watched the film over the weekend. Absolutely loved it. About half way through the film I recognized the guy behind all of the makeup and LED lights. Dennis the killer robot was played by Anthony Carrigan (Barry's Noho Hank). Its impressive as hell to actually be funny behind all that makeup and plastic. That guy is a great comedic talent, I really hope someone gives him a starring role in a comedy some day. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2EHjmbD

I'll start, LIFE could be a prequel to Venom. The end of LIFE is similar to start of Venom where the spacecraft crashes. The alien also acts like a parasite and moves in the same way.Bonus random link is the antagonist owns a company called the LIFE corporation. The movie styles are different but I feel there's parallels. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2QGtsvU

Box Office Week: The New Mutants FINALLY opens and the results are underwhelming, with $7M on 2,400 screens and $2.9M international. Tenet however does better in its international opening, claiming a pretty good $53M debut.

RankTitleDomestic Gross (Weekend)Worldwide Gross (Cume)Week #Percentage ChangeBudget1The New Mutants$7,000,000$9,900,0001N/A$100M2Unhinged$2,600,000$16,534,9033-35%$33M3Bill & Ted Face the Music$1,060,000$1,060,0001N/A$25M4The Personal History of David Copperfield$520,000$10,321,2651N/A$15M5Words on Bathroom Walls$453,360$1,083,6052+5%$9MNotable Box Office StoriesThe New Mutants - After what feels like an immensely long time on the shelf (certainly helps that 2020 has felt a full decade long) The New Mutants finally arrives in theaters to a global pandemic and growing civil unrest in the US. Who would have it any other way? It opened pretty poorly even considering all that, only scrapping up to be $7M at #1 in 2,400 screens. Now that could be dismissed if this was the first new release in 5 months, but Unhinged scored just $3M shy of that last week and Grumpy Gus Crowe: The Movie should really be nowhere near in competition to a major franchise film like Mutants. Now to be fair to those poor mutants who are new, this is by no means the longest a film has stayed on the shelf, heck even the longest for a $100M big budget. Just look at Chaos Walking, a Doug Liman directed, Charlie Kaufman written, Tom Holland starring, $100M film that was shot all the way back in 2017 and is still not out. But it is notable that the trailer to New Mutants debuted a full 3 years ago and is really the only modern big budget superhero film to get this treatment. The New Mutants (cont.) - The big reasons for the delays seem to be a mix of fear of tone and of course the Disney/Fox merger. When the New Mutants trailer came out people seemed genuinely excited about a potential horror first approach to superheroes but as those who have seen the film can contest the spooks, while they are there, are pretty limited. Supposedly there was a planned heavy reshoot to increase the spooky levels to downright spooky scary levels but those plans fell through when of course the Disney bought out Fox. Remember this is called "New Mutants" for a reason and the hot steamy cast and the emphasis on so far not seen comic creations was a clear way of Fox to refresh their now 20 year old X-Men franchise for a younger audience. That doesn't really fit with the whole Disney plan of scrapping all previous plans and making the X-Men fight (clicks on the random page button on the Marvel wiki) X'Hoss and (one more time) Bridget O'Hare, of course after first the (one last time) Uatu the Watcher solo film (okay that last one does sound kinda cool). The New Mutants (cont.) - So with all these delays and pushbacks it's not really likely that New Mutants would ever do well. If anything this move of releasing it purposefully only in theaters during a pandemic is kinda of a dastardly smart one. Now Disney can say "look we tried with New Mutants but clearly audiences aren't ready" and can justify more losses and pushbacks until the world is truly safe to reopen. And they can finally kill off the Fox X-Men with a quiet whimper. And look here's the thing that's frustrating about Disney, they aren't wrong in their cold calculations most of the time. New Mutants scored some pretty middling to scathing reviews and made very little impact. And it's unfortunate, especially when you consider some rather unique things about New Mutants like that it did try to make a more self-contained genre focused story or that it features front and center a queer main couple that doesn't pussyfoot around its representation so it can easily cut the scenes for homophobic countries. So farewell Fox X-Men. You were a dying breed but an interesting one with lots of insane ups and down. And god save whoever replaces Wolverine. You are fighting the biggest nerd up-hill battle my friend.Tenet - Mutants was the most interesting new release in the states but it was not the biggest story in the box office as Tenet opened internationally to a very healthy $53M, especially considering the world right now. That is pretty remarkable considering that Interstellar opened to around $85M and Inception opened to around $55M in much better times. So while certainly I think Tenet would be pushing more towards the $100M mark if it was released in normal times, it's still pretty dang good and a sign that Nolan may just weather the storm here. There's also the value of being one of the only new major films available and if New Mutants continues to flop overseas expect it to have an insanely long tail just for sheer monopolization of the market. The only major release still planned in the near future is Wonder Woman 1984 in October so it has a full month to just run the show. Plus add into that that any future countries that flattens the curve gets a nice Tenet treat as well so waves of this film could continue, IF word of mouth is good. And with complaints about a story way too convoluted and awful sound mixing it's possible Nolan may have out Nolaned himself here. Still I think this is a good sign of things to come for this film, but does not mean that Hollywood is jumping already to restart life as normal.Films Reddit Wants to FollowThis is a segment where we keep a weekly tally of currently showing films that aren't in the Top 5 that fellow redditors want updates on. What's Eating Gilbert Grape - Leo's Fearless Performance

What's Eating Gilbert Grape is a movie from 1993 that more often than not, comes off like a cheesy 90s teen drama. But for me, especially growing up, this was the most important movie in my life. That's because one of my siblings has a nearly identical neurological condition that Arnie has. In nearly every way, they behave the same. It's ridiculous.I know representation comes up a lot, but having something like this in your family is so isolating. Your family becomes a freak show for people to gawk at. This was the first time in my life that I felt that fiction was fully representing my lived experience.Crazy! It couldn't have happened if Leo wasn't fearless. I cannot imagine how hard it must have been to turn in that kind of performance without flinching. It's also clear to me that this couldn't happen today. That makes me sad. In a lot of ways, I get it.Regardless, I think about this movie all the time and I throw it on when I'm in the mood to cry. If you haven't seen it, please watch it and think about all the complicated, fucked up, and beautiful lives of the people struggling around you. This post has absolutely no real purpose. I am drunk. The Neon Demon: Almost perfect.

I know most won't agree with me in the sense that its almost perfect but. This was a movie when I saw it in theaters, really changed the way I look at movies. So many movies now go for shock value with the violence they portray and try to pull off symbolism and metaphors. Imo most try and fail. I honestly think The Neon Demon while on the surface is full of screwed up imagery and disturbing visuals, i think it executed its metaphors and symbolism better than pretty much any movie I've seen. Die Hard 3: With a Vengeance is unfairly hated and is the second best in the series.

Die Hard 3: With a Vengeance is unfairly hated and is the second best Die Hard film.I've previously noticed people IRL, on reddit, and online in general, have a lower opinion of DH3 which is fine everyone has their opinion. But I recently noticed that it's the 2nd lowest rated film in the franchise on both Rotten Tomatoes (57%) and Metacritic (58). This is ridiculous. DH3 is an AMAZING film, for several reasons:McClane is in NY, his hometown. He represents the city he loves. Plus so much footage is shot on location in the busy streets and congested areas. The Central Park scene is great.Jeremy Irons AND Samuel L. Jackson?! ("He didn't say Jésus. He said, "Hey, Zeus!" My name is Zeus. As in, father of Apollo? Mt. Olympus? Don't fuck with me or I'll shove a lightning bolt up your ass? Zeus! You got a problem with that?").The plot has clever twists and turns, along with having connections to the first film.It drops the repeated tropes from the fist 2 films (Christmas time, Holly being in direct danger, Al the cop, the annoying reporter).John McTiernan is BACK! And he directs the shit out of this film, his skill behind the camera was really missing from DH2: Die Harder. The action is great. So many bloody and brutal moments like the guy getting cut in half by the wire and the elevator shootout. Now, I know Die Hard is considered one of the best action films of all time and rightly so... but DH3 is a strong film and the best sequel in the franchise. This film is leagues better than Die Hard 2, it feels like a cheap, corporate sequel pumped out 2 years after the first simply for profits. But don’t get me wrong, DH2 is still a fun time and by no means bad but hard to follow up after the original. It also sits firmly over Die Hard 4 which, to me, wasn't that bad of a sequel either. There was cool practical stunts and an interesting premise, although McClane did receive some superhero level damage during his adventure and walked away fine.Don't start on Die Hard 5. That's a fucking dumpster fire and an abomination. Fuck John Moore (Director) and fuck Skip Woods (Writer). Truly upsetting that film was made. McClane doesn't even feel like McClane in that film, he's some boneheaded idiot endangering civilian lives by driving over cars and punching people. It's the GoT S8 of the Die Hard series.Sorry to rant. Long story short. Die Hard 3: With a Vengeance deserves more love and is criminally underrated on RT and Metacritic. If you haven't watched it, please do. It's great! via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2YQ7quX

Fast Times at Ridgemont High really surprised me

I went in expecting a dumb stoner comedy full of cheap laughs, but what I got was so much more. There were lots of heartfelt themes on growing up, finding your place in the world, status and self worth, sexual equality, the clash between the older and younger generation, and many others. I felt of lot of interesting emotions watching this movie that are hard to put into words. Without spoiling anything, there were some serious moments that totally caught me off guard that made this movie more than just a comedy.Seeing a young Forrest Whitaker was a nice surprise, and it’s interesting seeing how Sean Penn’s character went on to influence the likes of Keanu Reeves in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Butthead in Beavis and Butthead.I’ve always loved Superbad but this one honestly blows it out of the water as far as coming of age movies go. Just a fantastic movie all around. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3hNjFjq

What are some serious scenes that you can’t help but laugh at or struggle to take seriously?

For me, it’s this scene in No Country For Old Men. As the conversation progresses, it keeps getting more awkward as the cashier gets more nervous and cautious while Anton gets more pissed. I knew it was starting to get funny when the cashier said “we generally close at dark” as it’s sunny outside and Anton calls him out on it, but what really got me was Anton’s “What time do you go to bed?”. So random and weird to ask and the cashier has a reasonable reaction but Anton gets even more pissed. The trolling game is real with him. Anton eating one peanut or whatever at a time then choking on one lol. Poor old dude is even being nice to him later saying “if that’s the way you want to put it” to which Anton replies “I don’t have some way to put it. That’s the way it is.” Finally, Anton’s reaction when he has to repeat his line about the coin toss via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3hHpi2D

The Mexican restaurant scene from Nightcrawler where Jake Gyllenhaal’s character pressures Rene Russo’s characters into blackmail, sexual coercion and intimidation is one of the most uncomfortable non NSFW scenes I’ve ever seen.

Don’t get me wrong, Nightcrawler is an amazing movie with an all time great performance by Jake but man is that scene uncomfortable to watch. You can see so many emotions play out in the span of that short scene.Starts out as an invitation to lunch with a hint of wanting more by Jake. He shows up and comes prepared with facts about her life and her job and that she needs him in order to survive the LA News circuit. She starts out in control by saying she’s doing this lunch date as a courtesy and by the end he’s in charge making demands. In an already sleazy and uncomfortable movie filled with dead bodies, questionable moral ethics, and unhinged characters, Jake manages to top all that with this one scene. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/34ThhUu

Sam Raimi balances comedy with drama much more effectively than modern MCU movies

After re-watching Spider-Man 2, I was surprised at how well this film holds up. It's not as dated by the 2000s as the first Spider-Man is. It feels timeless in a way, and most of all, it excellently balsnces drama and comedy.I know people didn't like the fact that his Spider-Man wasn't as quippy as his comic counterpart, but here's why I think Raimi balances comedy and drama more effectively than MCU.He commits to the moment. Spider-Man 2 is intriguing in that it very abruptly has tonal shifts. The scene where he confronts Uncle Ben in his dream (which is actually him talking to his inner self), is very dramatic and poignant. There's no joke to undercut the scene. This scene serves its purpose of advancing the story and Peter's arc for the film. The very next scene is the comedic Raindrops scene, and the film fully commits to letting that comedy play off. It's not a meaningless scene either, its light hearted to contrast to just how much Peter's double life had been weighing on him. If you've been weighed down by something and are finally set free, you bet your ass you're gonna enjoy it initially, which is what Peter does. Now MCU, I'll use Infinity War as my prime example. There's a very poignant scene where Quill is talking to Gamora aboard their ship. You can actually legitimately feel the emotional stakes, which is rare for an MCU movie - but then, Drax immediately appears and ruins the scene with his invisible joke. While I laughed when I first saw this, I was disappointed afterwards. Why not just let the scene breathe? It was immediately undercut by comedy. It's not just Infinity War either, the MCU films are full of this, besides maybe Winter Soldier and Civil War.Raimi let the drama breathe which is what made it work. It made his comedy much more memorable because it was well balanced. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3gIJ7VO

So I decided in my sleep last night Father of the Bride III is the next movie they should bring back. The second one came out in 1995. Remember how Girl Interrupted was meant to be a Winona Ryder vehicle and instead it turned Angelina Jolie into a Academy Award winning star?

Poor Winona. At that time, her career was not going well, her former bestie Gwyneth Paltrow allegedly stole the role of Viola in Shakespeare in Love from her (which was a blessing. I mean, Winona would be convincing as a boy but period was never her forte. She was always too modern for this genre) so Girl Interrupted was going to be IT. A prestiged movie adaptation based in real life and Winona was going to play the author. What could go wrong?Uh, giving the meaty role of Lisa to a rising star called Angelina Jolie who blew everyone away with her performance. And this was a cast of amazing actresses: Brittany Murphy, Elisabeth Moss, Clea Duvall, Whoopi Goldberg, Vanessa Redgrave...etc.So Jolie won the Oscar, Ryder got to introduce the Oscars and some time later, she was caught shoplifting at Saks whereas Jolie was doing Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2EK52yS

When it first came out, TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME was panned by the critics. Years later, the film has become a cult classic and regarded among the best films made by David Lynch

The re-appreciation of TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME is comforting since I've been a supporter of it since I first laid my eyes on the film years ago when it was shown at midnight on a cable channel.I was into the series when I was a child so I was aware of the mythos and knowing how it ended didn't affect my "enjoyment". It explained stuff I didn't get and it offered a greater insight into Laura Palmer.Sheryl Lee's performance is among the best performances in the 90s from an American actress. The shell-shocked behavior mingled with her rebellious streak, Laura is a complex and difficult character to bring to light since she is a tragic figure who isn't conventionally tragic. Her family is toxic, her dad is an abuser, her mom drinks so Laura's one defense is to take over her sexuality. She doesn't want to be a victim yet sooner or later, she starts to break which is why Laura gives up. Dying is the one comfort she has.As horrifying as TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME is, it's also a sad, depressing film about a lost soul who never stood a chance. In a way, TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME is a a fusion of the terrifying eccentricity of BLUE VELVET and the gothic sadness of THE ELEPHANT MAN. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/31DUAls

Near the end of Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston said he’d watch Aaron Paul win an Oscar one day

I took this as a no brainer back then. Now it’s more in question. Not because of his talent but because his career has gone in a different direction.I didn’t watch Westworld S3 because I no longer care about that show.I didn’t watch the Hulu show because I didnt think the premise was interesting. But I do know Aaron Paul is an extremely good actor. He was just one Coen Bros. movie (or something) away from a better career path. Not that he’s doing so bad right now. I just think he should be Adam Driver level by now or close to it. I’m curious to see what the future holds in store and I hope one day, he will get his ‘scars (that’s my slightly shorter nickname for Oscars). via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2YIUGWP

"Feels Good Man" - the documentary about Pepe the Frog - is amazing

I just finished watching a digital screening of Feels Good Man (trailer here), a documentary tracing the trajectory of Pepe the Frog, a character created by artist Matt Furie in his comic series "Boys Club".Pepe from the comics is a goofy, partying slacker. A single panel from an issue of "Boys Club" where Pepe says, "Feels good man" became a very popular meme on 4chan, and eventually was co-opted by racists online and the alt-right to become a symbol of hatred. The film does an excellent job explaining the very odd and off-putting culture of 4chan and details the evolution of the meme from more-or-less innocent to terrible.Matt Furie is an instantly likable, kind and soft-spoken artist. It was heartbreaking and confusing for him to see his beloved character be taken from his control and turned into an icon of hate. The film follows his struggle to reclaim his character.I can't recommend this movie enough. It's at times funny, at times shocking, and ultimately inspiring and uplifting. It goes to some really crazy, unexpected places. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3hFjDdu

Damn, I love Death Becomes Her

I know it's kind of a throwaway movie now, rarely discussed on this sub or really anywhere I see online, but I saw this movie in the theater and I've watched it probably 10 times since, and I never get sick of it.TrailerBruce Willis cast completely against type. Meryl Streep chewing all the scenery in the world. Goldie Hawn looking the best I think she's ever looked in any movie. And Isabella Rossellini killing it in every short scene she's in. I LOVE this movie. Everyone talks about Robert Zemeckis' magic in Forrest Gump, but this movie is pretty amazing in terms of how it uses effects, and how creatively it explores the themes. It's just so much fun. This could be a 30 minute Tales from The Crypt episode in terms of content, but the screenplay manages to give us enough expansion that it feels perfect at 100 minutes.Oh, and the little details like the mirror glance at the weird anti-gravity chamber, the Sunset Blvd nods, and the fact that there are cats in the cupboard, and waking Bruce Willis up with a cold bloody mary on the forehead, the Greta Garbo reference, the appearances by Elvis and Andy Warhol...so much goodness in this film.Isabella giving Meryl a warning.Seriously, watch this movie. It's really good. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3hG1gVz
