/r/movies Golden Globes 2021: Official Post-Game Thread

Yes... despite our live thread being a bit late, the Golden Globes did indeed happen tonight! Discuss the results here with your fellow redditors. Who won big and who got snubbed? What did you think of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as the hosts? Who has the nicest house (from what little we could see of their Zoom backgrounds)? Who gave the least amount of fucks based upon their (lack of) outfit? If you've visited /r/movies during awards season before, then you will know that this is not the only time we get together as a subreddit to watch an awards ceremony live. Stay tuned as we will be debuting some fun new activities for the upcoming awards ceremonies. :)Please note that reddiquette applies to this and all discussion threads on reddit. Any plans for a ‘ The Nice Guys‘ sequel?

I recently sat down and watched the 2016 Shane Black film for the 37th time ‘ The Nice Guys’ starring Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling, and Angourie Rice.I really seem to like Shane Black's style of movies. I loved Iron Man 3. No wonder why they chose him to direct it. His writing fits Roberts and Don Cheadle’s fast-talking quip chemistry. Love it.The performances were all fantastic. Especially standout Angourie Rice who also starred in Spider-Man: Homecoming in a small but very funny role. Hopefully, she has more to do in the sequels of Spider-Man.The story was interesting and nothing I really watched before.Shane Black did an amazing job writing and directing this film. The dialogue was great and hilarious. The laughs kept coming. The situations these characters get into had me laughing consistently. Especially Ryan Gosling and Angourie Rice. Is this the first movie where the main character( Ryan Gosling) almost dies very quickly in the first 30 minutes of the film? That scene got me. Very funny.Matt Bomer was a good creepy villain as well. Any news on whether Shane Black is working on a sequel? Tons of potential. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3szn1eJ

[spoilers] The King's Speech (2010) - just something I noticed

I watched it for the third time or so today. It really is a masterpiece of externally demonstrating ("showing") audiences the importance of speech. The way speech affects other peoples' perception of you is shown in so many little ways that I had not noticed before, such as:When Elizabeth (George's wife) initally meets Lionel, she doesn't use received pronunciation. After he learns her true identity, she reverts back to using it; showing how closely even subtle changes in speech are associated with rank and perception. When Lionel is auditioning for King Lear, he stammers briefly, saying "wi--with--with". The people he is auditioning for immediately stop him. They point out his diction, and remark on his Australian accent. This demonstrates: 1. Stutters can be associated with fear and anxiety, 2. A stutter can damage other peoples' confidence in and perception of you, 3. How you speak can define your "role" in society, just like how he spoke prevented him from becoming "king" (with obvious parallels to how George's stutter may threaten his role as king.)The "stutters are associated with anxiety/fear" is again reinforced with Lionel when he meets George. Lionel is hastily primping himself in the mirror while the child talks to the duke and duchess outside the doors, indicating nervousness. He stutters subtly when he invites George to sit, saying "ma-make yourself at home". I wonder if part of his "we must be equals here" policy is related to his own self-consciousness and anxiety when it comes to class, in that if he himself is uncomfortable, he may stutter and undermine the patient's confidence in him (as well as making it more difficult to treat the patient).Anyway, just wanted to share! I'm still in the middle of watching it so I might edit this post as I go along. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3kEoTQL

Phone Booth (2002) - A totally forgotten film with Colin Farrell at its best needs a rewatch

I'm not sure why the movie got so forgotten, but that shouldn't have happened. Phone Booth is a classic chamber play that is almost exclusively performed by Colin Farrell in an old phone booth in New York.Joel Schumacher (director), Matthew Libatique ( cinematography) and Larry Cohen (script) keep the tension high throughout the film and are masters at leaving out useless things. With a running time of almost 80 minutes, this makes for an extremely entertaining experience. After seeing the film again after almost 20 years, I can only recommend giving it another chance. You will not regret it. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3kyDRba

Recently I rewatched Friday (1995). This is one brilliant comedy. Great performances by whole cast especially by Ice Cube and Chris Tukcer. Every single character is hilarious. The story is great and it's different than most of hood movies. This movie is extremly quotable. It's shame that Chris Tucker don't appear in many movies nowadays. Some movies are so dark, not that they’re explicit, but I can’t see anything

Movie production need to have better lighting. Years ago, I remember watching Percy Jackson and the Lightning Theft and during a pivotal action scene, it was pitch dark. There should be no reason why I can’t see what’s going on. Sometimes I have to turn up my brightness all the way on, but I still can’t see the movement or action. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/37Wh1VD

After watching Mission Impossible - Fallout again, I'm convinced it's my favorite action movie.

Just absolutely stellar from top to bottom. The story is fun, yet believable. The performances are great, and the score is phenomenal. Christopher McQuarrie's directing is in peak form, and the set pieces he whips up just contribute to the fun story. I'm really glad that not only did they being McQuarrie back for Fallout, which the first time the series has had the same director make two movies, but that they brought him back for MI7 AND MI8. Excited to see where he takes the series next. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3uBSVsZ

Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) has gone through more traumatic horrors in the Alien Franchise that most characters in a film series don't

I just did a marathon of the first four movies, the Alien Quadrilogy and kept track of all that Sigourney Weaver character goes through in the course of 4 films. To start even when we first meet her, she is in space having left her 11 year old or so daughter at home. Even with her survival she will never see her daughter or anyone from home ever again. Ever. The first film is to the point and beautiful, an alien comes on board she has to witness it burst out of her buddies chest killing him, all her teammates are killed so she is left alone with a cat to fight off an ugly scar alien herself. Its traumatic. Also the cyborg they brought along she thought she could trust turned on them..but she makes it out aliveOnly to wake up in the sequel 57 years later. She finds out her daughter who was 66 just died at home before she awoke. She's talked into going to a colony by another person who will betray her just to fight off more aliens. Everyone she gets to know is killed...the two survivors HIcks and little girl Newt she goes back into danger multiple times to save and risk her life to save the little girl multiple times because of a mother/daughter connection to make it to Safety...Just to find both were killed off screen while she was in orbit. All that time and energy spent bonding with a little girl who lost her entire family just for her to be lost just like that...oh also Ripley is now pregnant with an alien and is the only woman on an all male prison planet? Again everyone she meets or in case of a Lannister develops feelings for killed for her to survive just to realize she must kill herself now. After all the effort of several films to survive she now wants nothing more but to die, though its the only option and would put her at peace finally in a way...Just to be woken (cloned) again in 4th film. She finally made peace to die and now they bring her back again except she's not fully herself and she birthed an alien.. the fact its also 200 years in the future is also probably exhausting as well but again she must fight and kill her alien children and finally does make it to earth after hundreds of years except she's not really herself and earth is nothing like earth to her by now anyway.Like, damn, her story has a lot of suffering. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3q0YqOq

What is your favourite end of the world movie?

Mine's Melancholia, not only as end of the world movie, but also one of my all time favourite cinematographic experiences.Melancholia - trailerYes, yes, I know that the actual meaning is much deeper, nevertheless it pictures end of the world. There is something about Von Trier's filmmaking that is so beautiful even in its darkest moments.I know what I like, not to sound like sociopath, but I like when characters don't succeed, meaning, that there doesn't have to be a happy ending. Even better if characters embrace the oncoming doom. What's yours? "Batman: The Silent Motion Picture" - I've edited Tim Burton's "Batman" (1989) into one of the silent films that inspired it!

Watch "BATMAN - THE SILENT MOTION PICTURE"All rights to the film "Batman" belong to Warner Brothers. This film is a fan edit, not made for profit. I claim no right to the material presented above.I attempted to upload the project to Youtube, but as the silent auteurs F. W. Murnau and Fitz Lang would have intended - the Prince songs are still included. Prince's estate is notorious for not allowing his music online, so the edit can not be put on Youtube.I remember catching the end of Metropolis (1927) when I was a teenager and being stunned. Not only because of the scope of the film, but also because while I was watching it, I said, "Oh my God, this is Batman." I was (still am) a huge Batman and Burton fan and as a result, I took a deep dive into silent cinema.Roger Ebert recommended everyone watch their favorite color film in black & white to see if it was still effective. For years I've thought it would be an amazing exercise to edit Burton's Batman into a silent film and see if it still worked as well. Seeing it now, I'd argue that "Batman" is even stronger as a silent picture.- The Danny Elfman score is astounding on its own.- The lack of dialogue highlights how good Nicholson and Keaton's performances are, how intense their facial acting is since both men are under masks or makeup.- Tim Burton's art style is right out home as a German expressionist silent classic, it looks like it was always made to be seen this way.If you watch just one part of this film, jump ahead to the last 30 minutes and experience something astounding through that climax - a 1920's silent film disguised as an 80's Blockbuster. It really was a gift that Burton ever got to direct "Batman." Even with all the insane notes from producer Jon Peters and the studio system weighing down on him, he made a superhero film that works without anyone speaking. Think of every superhero film since then and now imagine if it'd work without dialogue - with just a score and some title cards. This was an amazing exercise for me that taught me so much about lighting and scene spacing. I hope you enjoy it! I'm the guy who shared the /r/MuppetsGreatGatsby script last month so I've really been trying to keep myself busy with personal projects as we hopefully near the end of this pandemic.EDIT:Here are some still I love from the project:- Batman at Axis Chemicals- The Joker plots- Batman in the cathedral- Joker with reel change cue mark- The Bat Signal- Birth of the Joker- Descent into Mystery- "I heard the BAT got him" via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3uCbxsX

What is an example of a great cast against type performance? What is an example of a terrible cast against type performance?

Sometimes an actors career can be completely redefined when they are given the opportunity to play against their very defined type. The most obvious example of this is Heath Ledger playing The Joker. I doubt there was a single person on the planet other than the actual filmmakers that cast him that had any expectation he would deliver the performance he did. His casting couldn’t of been more against type but it resulted in one of the most iconic performances in cinema. What are other examples of great cast against type performances? On the flip side there are other examples of cast against type performances that seem just as baffling on paper but unlike the above example did not pay off at all. For example Ralph Fiennes in Maid In Manhattan. Brilliant actor defined by his dark and brooding roles cast against type as the romantic lead in a light and breezy comedy. The result is a hilariously awkward performance where you are expecting Mr Fiennes to end up burying Jennifer Lopez in his garden rather than sweeping her off her feet. What are other examples of cast against type performances that probably shouldn’t of happened? via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2MzpFSC

Movies that feature one last scene/Easter egg after the credits roll? (not Marvel movies)

Because everybody knows Marvel movies do this, that's a given. I think it's cool when a movie does this, it rewards the viewer.I tend to always fast forward through credits (especially if I really liked the movie) to see if there's any Easter eggs or scenes after. You never know!I'll start: To Live and Die in LA (1985) shows a last shot of William Petersen at the very end, I thought it was a great touch because he dies at the end and it was shocking. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3bOdk5B

Watching Dredd gave me the same feeling that I got when I saw the original Robocop for the first time. That type of ultraviolent action mixed with science fiction that hits just right. HBOMax and Disney+ NEED to improve their apps if they want to compete with Netflix.

This is a bit of rant. I have a 2020 model Roku TV and the Disney+ app just failed to load on multiple attemps, and HBOMax is so slow to load and clunky to use that I don't watch anything on the app unless I absolutely have to.And granted, the Disney+ app is generally faster and more stable, but why does it keep asking if I want to resume the previous episode of WandaVision even if I've already finished watching it and am 30 seconds into the credits? Shouldn't that be enough for the app to register that this episode is "completed" and to show me the newest episode, instead? And why when I'm trying to find the newest episode, do I need to scroll to the end of the episode list? Why not list them in reverse chronoligical order so the newest episode is easiest to find? Or have a button up top to "play next episode"?HBOMax, on the other hand, is a disaster. It seems to load the "featured" row and "continue playing" row separately, so even after the app opens, I still need to wait around 10-20 seconds for the app to become usable. Is this the end of the world? No. I have food on my plate and a roof overhead and this is the definition of a first-world problem. But it DOES make the app unpleasant to use.I know media companies aren't used to acting like tech companies, but that's what their biggest competitor, Netflix, excels at - technology. I have never, in YEARS of using Netflix on every device imaginable, had a problem with the app or the interface. It. Just. Works. And my hope is, as these competitors mature, that they invest in their technology, back end, and front end user experiences similarly. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3dURMXx

What film has squandered the most talent?

I was thinking about the 2015 film Burnt the other day and just how much it wasted the time of the actors involved on such a lousy script. Daniel Brühl and Sienna Miller are both fantastic in anything they do, and Bradley Cooper is... consistent but still decent. What other films do you think wasted the time of the actors involved, where they are clearly too good for the film they are in? via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3r0oDOf
