Greyhound (2020) is a really well-done WWII movie

I haven't seen a lot of movies like it and it just happen to catch my eye the other day. There's a scene early on set on land that kind turned me off the movie at first, but the rest of the movie is set on a battleship and I was fully into it the whole time. It's just so good at capturing the feel of being in a battle at sea, you're not fighting physically then all of a sudden people you know are hit and are dead, and you have no way to control that. The action scenes are well shot and look great, with some especially great sound to help them out, and I looked it up and apparently it was only nominated for one Oscar. For Sound. Which makes total sense. the VFX aren't bad either, really selling them being at see. Aside from Tom Hanks, the cast hasn't much fame to speak of (unless you count Minkus from Boy Meets World) but everyone does a solid job. It's really just a pretty solid movie through and through and I definitely recommend it if you like ocean Battles or WWII.*Side note: Anyone get their daughters interested in history cause of this movie? via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3ySPQ9V

Movies where the love story includes an actress that is older than the actor, and its not a plot point.

It seems that most movies have a love story that includes an actress that is much younger than the actor. It is so common that it is almost a cliché at this point.Usually, if the actress is older than the actor, it is a plot point. In PCU, the high school kid touring the college wants to hook up with the college sophomore. In Grown Ups, Rob Schneider's character has a thing for old ladies. In American Pie, what's-his-face is trying to hook up with a MILF.Today I was watching Top Gun and saw something fairly rare. Kelly McGillis is older than Tom Cruise by 5 years and her age was not a plot point. Just two people hooking up and the actress happens to be older than the actor.Let's see what other movies we can list that are like this. No "cougars", no "MILFs", no "freshman trying to hook up with a senior". Just a love story where the leading lady happens to be older than the leading man. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3wRJ5nj

What is the most horrifying non-horror film ever made?

I'm talking about films that have little to no elements related to the horror genre. I would say Schindler's List due to the way it accurately shows the horrifying nature of the horrors of the holocaust, and the way how real-life evil is shown in the film. One of the best films that I won't watch again. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3i5Hbel

I Would 100% go watch a John Carter Sequel.

I just recently rewatced John Carter (of Mars). It's a spectacular film that set's up an expansive universe if you are anywhere familiar with the books. I'm not really surprised at the treatment the film got by Disney seeing it's timing, but I'm super hopeful an animated franchise can be made to flesh out the whole of the material with Disney+ or something of the sort.Rant over. Sorry if I seem pushy. I really liked the John Carter movie. It just needed better marketing. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/34uchoa

Moneyball... Why do I love this movie ?

So I’m from Ireland, i love Reddit and all it’s American influence, I have absolutely no idea how the great game of Baseball is played, it’s rules, it’s meaning and why it means so much to all walks of life in every corner of the US of A. Is it the masterful score by Mychael Danna, the genius screenplay by Sorkin?... The inspired casting choice of Jonah Hill and Pitt ? By my count I have watched this movie north of 10 times and every single time it has me captivated. Period. I think this may be the best example of a movie that can be elevated to cult favourite status because of the music and dialogue alone. On the surface it’s a pretty simple movie, I dare say it didn’t cost 10s of millions to produce but the fact that the story is real and the razor sharp dialogue can immerse some guy from Ireland who has absolutely zero knowledge of baseball and all the baggage that comes with it......well then I guess this movie might be thee most underrated movie in a very long time. Just like most sporting movies that come from the USA, ‘Many are called few are chosen’.. everyone should choose to watch this masterpiece of a movie. Thank you Bennet Miller. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3c0Yyt9

Army of the Dead is absolute garbage.

Just finished watching this and I had to rant somewhere. What in the fuck was this movie? This was nothing like what they promoted it as for one. The previews made it seem like a fun action movie with some scary cool zombie shit, and instead it disintegrates into a typical B-grade Snyder film. One of the biggest issues I had was the fact that it seemed like everyone in this team was just looking out for themselves. Particularly Bautista's charcater. He never seemed to pay attention to where anyone was and was often too busy trying to win his daughter's attention. The sub-plot with the daughter was pointless as well and completely unnecessary. Now I'm gonna say there were some redeeming qualities to this film. Mostly in the form of Dieter and Vanderohe and the friendship they have by the end of their time together. Basically everything else fell flat for me man. I was hoping for something better considering Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake was actually pretty great but then I learned he never wrote that one. It was James Gunn so that makes more sense now.Anyways, if you liked this movie then I'm happy for you but I was genuinely annoyed by the end of it. Rant over now. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3vHfE76

Trees Lounge (1996) written and directed by Steve Buscemi is one of the most engrossing, slice of life films I've seen in some time.

Been looking for hidden gems of the 90s as of late.Buscemi stars as an unemployed, frustrated 30 or 40 something constantly at odds with friends, family and the patrons of his local dive bar.The narrative is loose and the film is full of quirky characters. The film feels like it could be set in your own neighborhood. The struggles depticted with women, family and friends are all too real but done in a very subtle and swift way.Buscemi shines as the central character in this ensemble filled with some of the top character actors and actresses of the era. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3p83DoW

Twister (1996.) is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen and I loved every second of it.

I love to throw on background movies while I do gradschool work and ended up putting on Twister this morning. I hadn't seen Twister for about 20 years. So much to talk about.Highlights:-The practical effects are fantastic! So many impressive practical sets, from the house collapsing, to the garage at the drive in theater- seeing sets collapse and fall apart with the wind made the action scenes in this movie seem so punched up.-The adrenaline junkie on their team,-The rivalry with the guys in the black cars. Just pure fun- and then they stupidly get sucked into the final boss, er, tornado-"We Got Cows"-Pretty much everything else. The writing is laughable, no chemistry between Jo and Bill (i know there's backstage drama.)-Jo's obsession's with tornados. It is hilariously unhealthy.-The Dorothy and vehicle keeps getting knocked over and destroyed in every tornado encounter just to somehow be fixed up again/replaced. Who's funding all of this?-The van driving through the house blown in front of them.-Quickly dismantling, what I can assume to be, hundreds of pepsi cans and then reforming them to be pinwheels on the balls in Dorothy.-Sacrificing the Vehicle and Dorothy to the final tornado, kissing, running to a torture barn, and then finally strapping themselves to the anchored pipes.-Drive in tornado is by far the best tornado. Then the sister tornado. Then the final tornado. Then the first tornado, then lastly the tornado that goes in and out.I found myself laughing through the whole thing. Anyone have any thoughts on this iconic blockbuster? via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3fBaUdA

THE BLACK HOLE (1979) Disney's answer to Star Wars (!). What a dark and campy cult film.

Disney wanted to make a space adventure film, along the lines of a Thousand Leagues under the Sea. A spaced-themed disaster movie. So 1970s!The Good:The movie still looks great! Some SFX shots are noticeably green-screened, but for the most part, the look of this film is really cool. The concept: (Spoilers for a movie released in 1979) The idea that Maximilian Schell turned his entire human crew into androids is messed up. Also, the bad robot Maximilian still holds up! Holy shit is that thing evil. Then the insane end. The good crew ends up in Heaven, and Dr. Hans Reinhardt (Schell) ends up in Hell. The actors are also great! (from wiki:) The film stars Maximilian Schell, Robert Forster, Joseph Bottoms, Yvette Mimieux, Anthony Perkins and Ernest Borgnine, while the voices of the main robot characters are provided by Roddy McDowall and Slim Pickens (both uncredited). But I think the biggest shocker of the movie is the Tony Perkins death scene. Holy crap was this intense for a Disney movie! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bw2y3faZhUk&ab_channel=SynthesaurusRexSynthesaurusRexNow the Bad/CampyThe Score - I don't like it. It's super repetitive with big orchestra sounds. They were trying to go for the Star Wars big theme style, but I wish they went more futuristic - with synth music.I really wish Tangarine Dream scored this movie. But my biggest complaint is having humans be able to mentally link with robots through telepathy. WTF? How can a human have a psychic link with a robot?!?!?! In the movie, this helps move the story along.I wish they just used a coms device or an implant in the human to communicate with the robots instantly. In the end, this movie goes from dark, to really campy with the robots, then back to dark.If this was not a Disney product, I would love to see it remade. An updated version would be really interesting. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3uB44ZG

There are movies that fail to live up to the hype, and then there are movies that surprisingly exceed your expectations. My vote: MagnoliaI had only seen 4 Paul Thomas Anderson films before watching this movie (There Will Be Blood, The Master, Boogie Nights, and Phantom Thread), so I expected Magnolia to be at least a great film, and turns out it was more than a great movie. I hate inconsistent movie volume

In every single movie of series, there is a horrible ratio between action scene volume and conversation volume. Just rewatched “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” (1971) and Augustus Gloop is innocent!

Wonka said before opening the door to the main room that you can eat “almost anything” in the room. Wonka never said “except the chocolate river; that’s off limits.” Augustus is in a room where people are eating teacups, people are eating giant mushrooms, etc. And he takes a drink from a chocolate river. It has to be one of the best movies ever made (not a movie critic). Besides the fact that it has big names in it, it’s a work of art (again, not a critic). Love and Monsters is a surprisingly fun and wholesome movie; worthy of getting sequels

Didn’t have high expectations, but Boy did this monster adventure comedy deliver. It was brimming with heart, humour, and genuine emotions. The monster designs were unique and they all had individual personalities. My fav was the centipede. It was pure nightmare fuel. The protag’s dog gave an award worthy performance. Another hilarious character was a robot. Dylan O'Brien elevated the material with his charm. I hope he gets to reprise his role.It was also colourful without being gaudy which was a pleasant departure from the greys common in the post apocalyptic genre.I haven’t loved a movie this much in a long while. Sling Blade (1996)

A master class in directing, acting, cinematography, writing- and truly one man's vision, one man's story. I have not properly seen this film in over 20 years, but I watched it tonight. I was floored. Absolutely on the edge of my seat with the writing, characterization, character development, the cinematography, the myriad of unbroken takes on a single master shot....Billy Bob Thornton. All credit due to him. Holy shit.I just.... films like this are rarely pulled off perfectly and rare in general. This film is a testament to the power of cinema combined with slice of life storytelling.I watched this when I was a kid and I was purely scared. Scared of Billy Bob Thornton's character. Scared of Dwight Yoakam. Uncomfortable with John Ritter (RIP). The whole experience made me so uncomfortable. But I understood in ways I couldn't express at the time that it was a good film, that it was a special film.Watching Sling Blade today, I honestly can't think of a movie quite like it before or since, let alone anything in the vicinity of the subject or style that comes close to pulling it off nicely, let alone this artistically.Every shot, every scene, every moment is beautiful.J.T. Walsh is a revelation and the writing and direction of his scene is award worthy in an of itself and he's just a random sex offender in a single scene that has very little to no bearing on the actual story. The casting of the smaller supporting cast is spot on accurate to the area.I get pure joy from the flawless execution of the story, of the script, of the locale.I just wanted to express my appreciation for the film somewhere it was remotely appropriate.A few film makers have made their careers on singular cinematic achievements and then gone on to do anything but what made them successful and Billy Bob Thornton is certainly one of them. Not to take away from Geoffrey Rush's turn in Shine, let alone the others winners, but I think the mark was missed on not giving Billy Bob Thornton Best Actor, Director and Picture for the 1997 Oscars. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3vBZThU

Any of you 'overthink' while watching movies?

Do any of you overthink whilst watching a film? Small details. Also, after watching a movie do any of you overthink if you 'really' enjoyed it and does your brain start finding flaws in the movie that don't even exist? Do you start comparing a good film to other films for example? It happens with me lol and I'm trying to get rid of it. Of course this is not a huge deal and I'm sure everyone overthinks small details once in a while(like what could have been done better in a film), but it still bothers meEDIT: maybe overanalyze is a better term. https://ift.tt/3oYcZ6y via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2RWmebh

Paddington 2 loses the top spot on Rotten Tomatoes after its first rotten review was added today

Posted this previously but it was taken down because apparently my title broke a rule. So posting it again with a new title. The review in question is here.Felt like it was relevant news after the big media circus around Citizen Kane losing the mantle a few weeks ago. Here's a snippet from the reviewI reviewed Paddington 2 negatively for BBC radio on release in 2017, and on multiple occasions after that, and stand by every word of my criticism. This is not my Paddington Bear, but a sinister, malevolent imposter who should be shot into space, or nuked from space at the first opportunity. Over-confident, snide and sullen, this manky-looking bear bears little relation to the classic character, and vievwers should be warned; this ain't yo mamma's Paddington bear, and it won't be yours either. Maybe if you've never seen the tv show and don't know any better, this'll work, but long-term Paddington fans will find this too much to bear.Does this sound ridiculous to anyone else? mean he's entitled to his opinion but it feels like a contrarian reaction with it being added just weeks after the aforementioned news. Thoughts? via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2Swk81H
