Some interesting new info about Heat (1995) from Bill Simmons podcast

Bill Simmons and co had Michael Mann on their The Ringer podcast to talk about Heat and there were quite a few interesting revelations from the film.CastingThe part of Lauren was practically a coin toss between Kate Winslet and Natalie Portman, with Mann saying it was an extremely tough decision.Mann denied rumors about James Cann, Michael Madsen or Keanu Reeves almost being in the film.Characters/StoryMann went into further biographical detail about Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino). He mentioned Hanna grew up in an extremely rural part of Illinois and had no future prospects, then decided to join the Marines and served in the Tet Offensive. For fun he used to drive without headlights through farmland to see how long he could contain his fear. When he returned, he decided to join law school before quitting to become a Chicago detective. He had an epiphany around this time that all he cared about was pursuit.Chris (Val Kilmer) was a gambling addict who met Charlene in Las Vegas in 1988, when she was an expensive call girl. While the backstory of Neil (Robert DeNiro) had briefly been brought up here and there, Mann contextualized him against the Folsom inmates he met when filming The Jericho Mile. He even mentioned he used the way an inmate gave a glass of water to a member of the crew for when Neil gave Eady the glass with the napkin. Many of the inmates in Folsom read Marx and books about Buddhism, believing that karma dictated everything, which is also what Neil believed.FutureThe novel was supposed to come out sometime this year but it looks like it's arriving next summer. It's set in 1988 and 1998 and will follow the characters before and after the events of the film. Kelso (Tom Noonan) is a major character.Hope this interesting info is at least interesting to some.. was the first time for me learning a lot of these details. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3EF3VKf
