Promising Young Woman really took me off guard.

Somehow I was imagining something quirky and upbeat. Between the scene of the coffee spit and the gleeful Oscars’ acceptance speech, I wasn’t expecting the movie to be this dark. But fuck it is really, really dark- all the way to the last wink. The editing and sound design on the bed scene was really unsettling, with a raw honesty I wasn’t prepared for. It’s not perfect, but the more I reflect on it the more I find the “imperfections” are what make the film even stronger. The weird pacing, the tonal dissonances, the sudden shifts in focus… All things that would normally weaken a movie, but in this case really land the point. The randomness, the unfairness, the truth beneath the poppy veneer, the lies we tell ourselves. What starts as a mildly funny, slightly provocative romantic redemption ends as a gut punch expose of sexual abuse and victim blaming. It sets its trap carefully, and never lets go of us until we see the damage. It is a worthy candy that leaves a bitter aftertaste - on purpose. I hope many people see it. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3bcdGU2
