Film fans of Reddit, I have been wondering how you all cope with enjoying a movie where the lead actor, or any of the prominent cast are, in real life, a bit of a bad person. For me specifically, I adore the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies. But, by all accounts online, Tobey Maguire is a dick in real life. When I was a kid, I obviously had no idea of this and idolised this guy as my Spider-Man. Obviously it was Peter Parker/Spider-Man I was idolising most, but now that there are three movie spider-men, the differentiating factor is the actor.I have since read the stories of Maguire in poker, how he treated Molly Bloom, and the story recently published in Houston Curtis' book "Billion Dollar Hollywood Heist", that claimed Maguire loaned Curtis (his partner in running the poker rings) money to help him out of a tight spot, only to claim he wanted 50% of Curtis' poker earnings for the next year, shouting to Curtis "I fucking own you now!". I have heard the story about how Joe Manganiello was offered money to punch Maguire on set of Spider-Man 1, and how Maguire exaggerated a back injury to try and get Spider-Man 2 made on his terms with a bigger paycheck, only to lose this gamble, and then fire his agent. This is to name a few stories. Now, I still love the movies. They have too much else for me to love about them, and their appealing sincerity is owed to the efforts of Sam Raimi and his screenwriting team. But now I have to work to forget Maguire, try and see only Peter, and it's an odd feeling, an effort. Art and artist should always be separated, but movies are a tough one when your investment comes in the faces and voices of actors on screen. I struggle to separate those faces and think solely of the character sometimes, with the thoughts of their real-life nastiness interfering with the emotion of the movie. So, how do you guys deal with it? Do you have any examples yourself, or ones that come from personal experience? If so, how do you find separating art from artist? via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3bwGftx
