I really wish Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson would set aside his personal brand and star in an actual movie for once

First of all, this isn’t a hate post on Dwayne. I’m sure he’s a good dude. But I think most of us can agree that his acting is just him being himself in different tight shirts. Which doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing; spectacular popcorn movies with nothing but explosions and biceps can be just as rewarding as films where everyone’s depressed. And going the route of old school action stars, he has carved out a massive career out of punching and PED’s (his bathwater alone must be causing rapid trap growth among sewer gators). But while the Schwarzeneggers and Stallones of the past had plenty of goofy flexing and questionable acting, even their most ludicrous movies still had a sense of sincerity and heart. More importantly, they starred in some truly fantastic movies that stand the test of time. Johnson has got nothing close to that. His movies sound fun as hell on paper, but when actually viewed on screen just comes across as empty ads made to further build his personal brand rather than to actually entertain you. The fact that he had it in his contract during the “Fast” movies that he couldn’t lose a fight, or that every single character in all his movies just have to marvel at how big he his, just gives off a bad taste. The dude still claims to be 6’5 and that his physique is the result of nothing but hard work and cod protein, even though he’s basically radioactive at this point. And after having just watched “Red Notice”, an action comedy so devoid of charm it made Ed Sheeran the MVP, I realized he’s managed to become maybe the biggest movie star in the world without starring in a single, legitimately great live-action movie in his career. He’s got a few titles I would consider worth killing a couple of hours for, thanks to other cast members like Jack Black or Emily Blunt. Maybe “The Rundown” is worth a revisit. And “Fast Five” is actually pretty decent, but that’s mostly because the movie hit a tonal sweet spot before completely turning into the realization of Vin Diesel’s adolescent daydreams. But there are no great movies there. They’re mostly soulless straight to DVD flicks with tequila-fueled budgets.I would love to see The Rock take a little break from making movies built around his persona, and start performing for the movie rather than it being an excuse for him to sell his “big motherfucker” brand. Instead of him banging his chest at every opportunity, imagine seeing him cast in a “Mad Max” type of movie, where world building and directing comes first. Or maybe a slick “Game Night”-esque comedy where he could use his comedic timing and bounce off a cast full of talent that isn’t just Kevin Hart screaming. He’s never going to win any acting awards, but I really do think he could deliver some future classics if he decided to take a risk and act as a part of someone else’s production that doesn’t exist solely for his benefit. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3DdOmcp
