I actually watched the movie last night, but despite finishing the movie ~12 hours ago, I've needed time to continue to mull it over and just take it in (well, and sleep). Oldboy is one of those movies that I've heard about for years and years, so I finally decided to watch it. I heard that the 2013 remake wasn't great, so I sought out the original, and it did not disappoint!Choi Min-sik is absolutely fucking incredible. I'd already seen him in I Saw The Devil (which was also excellent) so I was happy to see him again. He is so insanely talented. But the rest of the cast was great too! I really liked Yoo Ji-Tae as well, I thought he pulled off the "smarmy rich guy" really well, but had great range in the scenes that he needed them for.One thing that did surprise me was actually the overall lack of explicit violence in the movie - or rather, the lack of gore. One of the things that I continually heard about this movie was about how violent that it was, and being the ignorant American that I am, I took that to mean gore. But while the movie contains a lot of violence, there really isn't a whole lot of gore. That's not a bad thing by the way, I just thought it was really interesting how my pre-conceived notion of violence was different than what was actually in the movie.I think the thing that I appreciated the most about the movie is that it goes... places. It deals with ideas and plot threads that no mainstream American movie would touch in 1,000 years and while the content itself was disturbing (it's supposed to be disturbing), it was really satisfying to see a movie actually "go there" and to not be afraid to actually deal with some ugly ideas. The only real issues I had with the movie are incredibly minor nitpicks: some of the CG has aged a bit, and sometimes the pacing felt a bit off. There were some points where it felt like scenes were honestly missing - the movie jumped from one thing to another so quick that I actually had to pause/rewind to make sure I didn't miss anything. Luckily though it wasn't too often, and doesn't even come close to detracting from the entire movie as a whole.Overall, if you haven't seen the movie I definitely cannot recommend it enough. It's satisfying, disturbing, engrossing, and really great. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3hGSnyb
