Big Trouble in Little China (1986) is nonstop insanity and insanely fun

I'm a John Carpenter fan and just never got around to this one. I've seen almost all his other films. Well, I finally got around to BTILC and it's rare to watch a movie that makes you feel like you took a few tabs of acid when you didn't. It's completely insane in all the best ways, embracing some action movie tropes while riotously subverting others. Also, as a Mortal Kombat fan, it was fun seeing where John Tobias and Ed Boon got some of their ideas from, especially Raiden and Shang Tsung. The acting and dialog seems intentionally campy, especially when it comes to the overdramatic way lines are delivered. They give you a little time to get used to how whacky things are going to be and eventually the viewer and the characters become weirdly accepting of it. They even lampshade the ridiculous wire fighting martial arts, but it's all done so tongue-in-cheek you can't help but be entertained. And that's it. It's so silly it works. The plot feels like it belongs in an 80s Double Dragon style video game complete with sub-boss and boss characters.Gotta give John Carpenter credit for scoring his movies himself. He's got such a unique style that suits these things perfectly capturing the mood and a distinctly 80s synch rock and weird atmospheric sounds. If you're looking for something completely outrageous, weird, and wild, I highly recommend it. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3ex03Rm
