Watching The Incredibles and Incredibles 2 in the Wrong Order Enhances Both Films

Imagine if you will, that this movie comes out about a family of superheroes in 2004. It's about a super powered mom who gets hired by this billionaire to undo a law banning superheroes. It seems pretty good although some of the characters seem flat, they're miles ahead of how most families are portrayed in animation. It seemed to be a slightly trope heavy version of a really intense Saturday morning cartoon. It doesn't subvert the formula but embraces and almost celebrates it.Then fourteen years later, we get a prequel about the father and how they originally came into the situation we saw in the first movie. This film wholly deconstructs all of the tropes from the first movie. It takes what was before simply fun animated flick to being this intense melodrama about purpose, fulfillment and superiority. These characters who were fun stock family archetypes become wholly realized fleshed out complex human beings with their own distinct story arches and motivations. The villain is a deconstruction of the well intentioned billionaire fan trope from the first film. The action and death count are doubled. This is how I watched both The Incredibles and Incredibles 2 recently while smoking a few bowls. Not saying you have to spark up, but doing so for me helped me gain a further appreciation for what both of these films were trying to do. I really hope Brad Bird considers doing an actual animated series based in this universe for Disney+ . I think the aesthetic and themes and techniques he employs in both films would be better served by a more strictly serialized format. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3exrStl
