MovieModsRecommend - Godfrey Reggio's The Qatsi Trilogy and Ron Fricke's Baraka & Samsara.

Ever had a film that's left you speechless? Godfrey Reggio's The Qatsi Trilogy and Ron Fricke's Baraka & Samsara did just that to me when I first saw them, so I enlisted my fellow moderator's help for how to describe these films. So, without further ado, u/girafa's words on Godfrey Reggio's The Qatsi Trilogy:I learned of the Qatsi trilogy in 2002 when the trailer for Naqoyqatsi hit Apple's trailer website (best way to view them at the time). It was bold, had incredible music, and clearly batshit crazy. I drove five hours to New York City to watch it.The Qatsi trilogy was directed by 6'6" Godfrey Reggio, a man who spent 14 years in silence with the Hopi Indians. All three movies are scored by Philip Glass, who is a living legend. Before we had home video, and YouTube, and instant access to imagery on those magic plastic machines in our pockets, Koyaanistaqsi was show-stopping /r/earthporn. Its imagery was stunning for its time, and like the trailer says, "See the world for the very first time."Not only are these movies hypnotic meditations on humanity and its relationship with the world, but Philip Glass' Koyaanisqatsi score is a watershed moment in modern classical music. His work on Powaqqatsi has the theme that was later worked into The Truman Show and The Hours. While I own all five, my favorites remain the first two. They seem to transcend the line of b-roll set to music into something more, just in a way that strikes. Watching the end of Koyaanisqatsi, which isn't... too big of a spoiler (as far as someone could spoil a non-narrative film) is just simply divine.I hope they leave you just as speechless as they did me when I first saw them. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3lmnVco
