Matt Damon's performance in "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (1999) remains his best and most risk-taking performance

Tom Ripley isn't an easy character to play: the degree of layers and complex values Tom Ripley has keeps you wondering what his endgame is.Matt Damon's entire performance is a stream of ambiguity from beginning to end. Ripley doesn't have a steady personality because he doesn't like who he is and his attraction to the playboy Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law, at the height of his beauty) is a mix of sexual desire and idolization. He doesn't want to just fuck Dickie, he wants to be Dickie, and as his obsession gets worse and Dickie becomes less tolerant of his friend, Tom Ripley turns homicidal.I've seen various good performances from Matt Damon yet his performance in The Talented Mr. Ripley is the one I'm most impressed by. It's not a straightforward role, he has to keep switching personalities and also be consistent, you have to see his Tom as a goof and when his true colors show up, Damon has to scare you which he succeeds as his fear of discovery takes over. Also, you have to empathize with Tom's tragedy: he kills and maims and steals yet to keep his lie, he also has to sacrifice those he loves the most. The charade offers Tom the lifestyle he wants however it also becomes his cross to bear. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3dXYkB5
