Jingle All the Way (1996) is a Christmas classic that stands the test of time

For the uninitiated, Jingle All the Way puts us in the shoes of Howard Langston, a bad ass (albeit neglectful) father in search of the most coveted toy of the Christmas of 96 - TurboMan. His trysts drag him all across the beautiful and snowy Minneapolis - where his encounters include a slightly terroristic Sinbad, a gang of toy smuggling Santas, an adulterous neighbor looking to bed his wife, and so much more. But when young Anakin Skywalker wants a TurboMan, you can trust the Terminator to deliver in some form or another. This movie has it all. There are slapstick action sequences, an increasingly desperate protagonist and villain, and heart felt family moments that melt even the Scroogeist hearts. Above all else, this is a hyper-relevant satire that likely had no intention of being more than a goofy holiday comedy. Its take on the tragedy of buying the love of your family, instead of simply being there for them, is as thinly veiled as a dog shit on the beach but it holds up no matter what era it’s viewed in. The immense pressure on parents to buy the right gift for their families or suffer the bullshit social consequences is just as apparent today as it was in the mid-90s.I struggled to find a copy of this bad boy anywhere but if you have the courage displayed by the characters in this Christmas classic, I trust you’ll find a way to track it down.
