Here's a misinterpretation I've seen a lot: "La La Land is about a white guy who saves jazz"No. No it isn't.Yes Sebastian, Ryan Gosling's character, hates New Jazz and talks about wanting to save it. And yes it's portrayed as a bad thing that he joins a New Jazz group. But he doesn't save anything. And the group, nor John Legend's character, get anything bad to happen to them. Sebastian just leaves the group to open his own Jazz club while they continue to do their own thing really. If anything, it's more like "a white guy wants to save Jazz but realizes New Jazz just isn't his thing and sticks to Old Jazz". Which, yeah, what's so bad about that? No one should be forced to like music that just doesn't speak to them.In fact, that's kind've the whole overarching theme of the movie-achieving your dreams while having more realistic expectations. Mia wanted to automatically be a movie star while Sebastian wanted to "change the world" and bring back the Old Jazz he loved so much. But Mia realized it takes time to become a star and eventually got there while Sebastian realized he can just stick with his Jazz club and that's a-okay.It's why the movie ends with them not together. If the movie ended with them together, like you'd think a musical like this would usually end, it would be too cheesy and unrealistic. But, somewhere along the way, they drifted apart and reality set in, showing they were not right for each other after all. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2ZJz7EX
