Watching Sicario and Soldado back to back really shows how stylistically strong the first one is

So I decided to do a double feature with the two films, having only seen Sicario when it came out and not the second one yet. I have seen a lot of people talk about the script issues of the sequel, but I think another thing that makes the sequel not quite as good as the first one is the difference between the artistic style of the two directors. Villeneuve's Sicario is so minimalistic and pulled back. The story itself isn't really that "orginal" when you think about it, but it manages to elevate itself through it's direction and a strong idea of it's thematic elements. While Soldado leans so much in being another mexican cartel focused crime thriller. With a lot of cliche character beats and set pieces. Sure there are some returning characters and it takes a lot of the visual cues from the first film, but overall the world just feels so much different. Especially with the inclusion of the kids and scenes with governement officials it started to feel much more like a "movie" than Sicario did. It is a decent crime thriller, but it really fails as a sequel to Sicario. via /r/movies http://bit.ly/2MhOUEt
