Box Office Week: Aquaman is #1 again for third week in a row as it passes $900M worldwide, becoming the highest grossing DCEU film worldwide. Meanwhile, Escape Room surprises at #2 with a good $18M debut.

The film that tells the harrowing true story of what if my had no more mans defeated its puny Christmas opponents and now is destroying its own brethren. While the film currently is the second lowest grossing DCEU film domestically (remember every previous entry besides Justice League earned $300M domestic) it is now the highest grossing DCEU film worldwide, surpassing the lifetime worldwide gross of Batman v Superman ($873.6M). The film is now rocketing towards becoming the first DCEU film to cross $1B and the first time ever a non-Batman DC film would pass that milestone. While the previous entries were more domestic hits with solid worldwide runs, Aquaman has just been demolishing overseas with China obviously leading the pack but also huge runs in South Korea, Mexico, and Brazil. Oh and the amount it's done underseas, forget about it. It will take a year to count how many pearls its earned. (Literally fire me from life, I can't stop with these bad aqua jokes.)Escape Room - The good thing about how fast and cheap modern horror is currently is that you can make a film about a current hit trend and the film might actually come out while the trend is still relevant. Such is the case with Escape Room, based on the popular puzzle solving party trend, that opened at #2 with $18M. That's a pretty great debut for a January horror film with a $9M budget, but this is clearly a win for great programming. There hasn't been a new release since Christmas Day and there's a bevy of new releases coming in just a week. By getting in hot initially means even if Escape Room has a massive drop-off next weekend, it will still come out on top. Plus it scored a B rating on Cinemascore so this one might stick around for a bit longer than normal. Not to mention getting in on a popular trend while the trend is still fairly relevant and applying horror to an escape room is probably a lot more understandable than say a horror film based on a government shutdown...okay but what if you were in a national park and a government shutdown happened, so you were the only ones out in the woods as a killer stalks you? Shit, I gotta go. I got to pitch this to Jason Blum.Oscar Movie Round-Up - Much to the surprise of many and it seems to the horror of /r/movies, Bohemian Rhapsody last night took the Golden Globe for Best Drama and looks to cement itself as a rather unlikely frontrunner for Best Picture. The effect of the win for it and Green Book, which won Best Comedy, won't be felt until next weekend as the awards debuted Sunday, but this weekend BR did pass a major milestone as it hit $743.7M worldwide, which puts it past the lifetime gross of Deadpool 2 and places it in the top 100 highest grossing films of all time. The film's run has just been incredible and this win will only further its box office success. Meanwhile If Beale Street Could Talk managed to score a similar surprise but seemingly more welcome win for Best Supporting Actress for Regina King. The film had another great expansion weekend as it expanded to 335 theaters and earned $1.8M for the weekend, a per theater average of $5,521. Finally, On the Basis of Sex added another 80 theaters for a total of 112 where it earned $1.6M for the weekend, a per theater average of $14,920. The film continues to see excellent PTAs so expect it to slowly expand, riding that wave of hey RGB is a pretty cool lady huh?Films Reddit Wants to FollowThis is a segment where we keep a weekly tally of currently showing films that aren't in the Top 5 that fellow redditors want updates on.
