Box Office Week: The US box office has its best weekend since March 2020 as A Quiet Place Part II earned a healthy $57M for the three day holiday. Cruella manages to snag a solid $26.5M despite being available same day on PVOD. Overall the entire BO is down $130M from Memorial Day 2019.

While likely under the potential $60M - $80M opening it could have had last year, the fact that this film delayed for over a year still managed to snag $57M and push the overall weekend to the best one since March 2020 is quite impressive and a really good sign of things to come. The sequel to the surpassingly massive 2018 hit had triple the budget and a healthy ad campaign so this one may still be a bit of a loss when all things are tabulated and calculatroned. But at this point it's more about keeping theaters and the industry alive so I'm sure Paramount is very happy today and Quiet Place Part 3: Sound's Revenge is certainly still on the books.Cruella - This is a rather interesting one for the future of big movie releases as Cruella opened to a solid if not wowing $26.5M at #2 for the three-day weekend. Now of course the big factor here is that the film was also day and date released on PVOD (premium video on demand) for $30 on Disney+, so certainly we can chalk up several millions and maybe even tens of millions less at this box office to that decision (we can't know for sure as Disney does not release digital sales numbers). But what is fascinating here is that the $25M number is much higher than some expected and shows that when given the option people will still take the potential bigger buck and certainly bigger stress of seeing a film in a theater than in the comfort of their home. The real test will certainly be Black Widow, also getting a D&D release on streaming and theaters but with that being a $200M bombastic action film there will certainly be more incentive to go the theatrical route. But then there's a new issue. Say in theory that Black Widow scores $250M domestic and $800M world. Now on top of that it earns $50M - $100M on PVOD. Then Disney may begin to wonder why aren't all of their films on PVOD? It's these kind of upheavals that will be fascinating and a bit scary to watch in the future.Cruella and A Quiet Place Part II...umm part 2 However don't view this quite yet as the cinemas are back and better than ever. Comparing this to the 2019 Memorial Day box office when blue Will Smith graced our meme lives forever, the whole take for the weekend is down $130M from that comparison. So while this is good news coming from both films it's really not the 100% back to normal the cinemas and the studios want. It is a great opener though and one hopes that F9 (pronounced Fah Nien) and Black Widow could be the ones to really bring back that summer movie gross magic. Sorry John K, your majestic beard did not quite save cinema but you may have moved it from critical to stable.Films Reddit Wants to FollowHey, I'm finally back!
