Seeing Ruby Rhod be paid to follow Korben around with cameras and a crew for winning a sweepstakes was the first thing that didn't make sense to me. I remember thinking "Do winners really get followed around their vacations? And why must they record everything?"When Ruby tells Korben to say something to the people and put the mic to his face, I wondered "what people? Is it the radio? The people on the ship?" And Korben has a dry answer. And Ruby gets upset and wants it to be more "GREEN". Which really reminds me of today's YouTube influencers. They vlog, videotape everything, put on loud personas, hand out prizes for views all for the entertainment of their subscribers or "the people". And making things more green should be slang we use this year! Or would it be too similar to "going green"? Hmm...His crazy hairstyle, leopard clothing, shoes, lipstick, and accessories seemed so crazy to see on a man in 1997 (no offense to Prince). I didn't quite have an understanding of what gay meant at my age at the time of watching the movie, but when he makes love to the woman on the ship it didn't add up to me. I was confused on Gay vs. Straight. Why would a woman like a man with lipstick? But in 2021 and now being an adult I know so much more about the various pronouns and preferences. It's such a wide range of expression and identification. Not at all black and white. When he shuts off the cameras he is bored and angry. Switches to his true self which many entertainers do when the cameras stop rolling. In the movie he hates guns and smoking... need I say more with how that fits in 2021?Finally, his hairstyle. What the heck? Platinum blonde with a toilet roll sticking out the front shape? If any rapper or R&B singer made their debut with that hairstyle this year, I would not be surprised.I realize we aren't fully in the Fifth Element timeline because of the flying cars and international space entertainment cruises. But Ruby definitely makes more sense to me now.Disclaimer: I haven't watched the movie since I was young. This is just what I remember. I may have some things wrong and you can correct me or add more comparisons from the movie Fifth Element in 1997 to 2021. Thanks. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2Px1Sns

» In 1997's Fifth Element Ruby Rhod made absolutely no sense to me as a kid, but I found him hilarious. Now in the year 2021, Ruby Rhod almost identically embodies most entertainers today; loud, crazy hair, catchy slang, androgynous, has quit smoking.
