I was less than 5 yo when I tricked my mom into buying me this movie, I don't even remember what I told her, I just remember I saw a part when I was at my cousin's house and decided I wanted to watch it once I found it in the shop.My cousin's family was kind of "the cool nerdy one", 3 brothers that grew up playing dungeons and dragons and had a lot of videogames. On the other hand, my mom was always strict in that matter, I wasn't allowed to have videogames and I couldn't watch any movie that was even slightly violent; so I was often going to my cousin's home to play some videogames with him (the youngest one was just one year's older than me) or watch some cooler movies that were not intended for us children.Long story short, one day I was with my mom in a movie store and I saw Starship Troopers, and immediately recognized it. Once convinced my mom (again, I don't remember how, probably I told her it was something it wasn't, pretty much how I told her Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was some car racing game once I was finally allowed to play games on our pc), we went home and she said she was going to watch it with me to assure it wasn't violent.Well, fuck. Pretty much at the first war scene, she freaked out and took the cassette away.Fortunately, she didn't think much of where to hide it, so the first day I was left home alone (probably because of some sickness), I literally went through the whole house, just to find the cassette in the garage, so I put it on and played it.I think around the end of the movie, my mom came back and took it away again, but by that time the damage was already done: it was the coolest movie I ever watched.I remember talking about it to all my friends, playing together in a sort of simulation of the movie, bring the cassette in my backpack to school. I was literally obsessed with that.Ofc at that time I couldn't understand the bad acting or the story in general, for me it was just a bunch of soldiers in cool armor suits fighting alien monsters while rocking around in big ass spaceships with a glorius soundtracks.I discovered it back few days ago, when I got a video suggestion of its majestic soundtrack from youtube, bringing up a lot of good memories. But I also started reading the criticisms and understand the story better. Now I find intriguing the whole universe and society depicted in the movie and the fact it was a satiric representation of the military-propaganda (which anyway I never experienced myself, as I live in Europe). via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3kOFdP7
