The Old Guard - Truly Progressive Representation?

On a post earlier complaining about the music in the movie, someone commented saying they think the movie was too much "girl power."It got me thinking. None of the characters' "identities" ever really came up. It feels like the writers went out of their way to make these characters fully developed without their ethnicity, gender, or sexuality being integral to their backstory.Andy and Nile could have been written as men and the story would be practically identical. Joe and Nicky could have been a heterosexual couple and the movie would have been practically identical. Nile could have been white, Andy could have been black. Same story, every time.Nile simply was a black woman. Joe and Nicky simply were gay. There was no need to talk about it or address it. The story didn't need to focus on that because it wasn't important to the story and I feel like we need more of this kind of representation in entertainment media. As a gay man, I get so bored with adolescent coming out stories. I'm tired of "bigoted asshole creates personal problem but sees the error of their ways" stories. It felt refreshing to just see gay characters and not have their story be defined by their gayness. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/307AQEB
