So much works in this movie. Not Unlike Blade Runner (1982), the movie is an audiovisual feast. The visuals are incredible, combining stunning production design work with beautiful cinematography and good CGI. If you have seen the movie, its hard to forget the sky tower home or the bubble ship Cruise flies. Unique, innovative designs wonderfully brought to life. The combination of M83 score and sound design is also terrific, giving Oblivion a unique soundscape in the world of sci-fi. The music does standout from other similar science fiction films. Its redundant to say that Tom Cruise was very good (when is he not?), and even Andrea Riseborough leaves a good impression.Furthermore, the movie has good ideas involving memories/soul relationship with a persons body, cloning, alien invasion (I appreciated that Sally was a unique kind of villain for an alien), humans relationship with the planet etc. Even the basic plot and premise of the movie is thrilling for the most part and there is never a dull moment. Joseph Kosinski does a fine job handling everything. The only problem that Oblivion from reaching greatness imo is how they turn the plot in the 2nd half into a more generic story, with a few plot consistencies as well. It turns into a simple action movie involving drones towards the and fails to say something memorable in terms of its themes. The end of Sally feels unearned as does the happy ending of the clone surviving.Overall, it knocks out of the park in many areas, but the writing lets it down and prevents it from being a top tier sci fi film. However, it is still a very solid sci fi film that has a high rewatch value. Its not a very popular movie, sonic you havent seen it, give it a watch for the glorious visuals alone. And the coolest house put to film.Edit: A word via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2UJYuG4
