I had the idea in college to figure out how to see every film nominated for an Oscar, in all categories, before the ceremony. I think it's pretty rare even for Academy members to do this, so I thought it'd be fun to see how difficult the challenge would be for an average film fan to complete every movie without access to screeners.I tried a couple times pretty casually, and one year got within 3 movies but ultimately gave up (particularly because the last few films weren't screening anywhere).I lived in NYC for a good portion of last year, so I was luckily able to catch a lot of movies early-- especially documentaries and international films that end up being more difficult to track down. Being in good shape, I decided to go all-in and try to finally complete this bucket list item this year....aaaand as of Friday, I officially finished everything! I listened to all scores & songs, saw every movie (even the Best Original Song nominees, which I wouldn't consider necessary to be an Oscar Completest), and gathered some data along the way. I also paid for/saw everything legally, which ended up being a lot more difficult than I anticipated.Also, because of Corpus Christi screening essentially nowhere in America, it became the catalyst for me to take a last-second weekend trip to NYC so I could catch the single screening happening in Stamford, CT. This pushed my overall costs up a fair amount, and the entire challenge cost an amount of money I'm completely ashamed to admit but decided to include anyways.Here's the fun mini-data sheet I made about the process! My analysis probably isn't perfect, but did my best with all of the nuances in the data. Happy to answer any questions.Overall, this was a really interesting process and I'm extremely relieved it's over. I definitely won't be doing it again, especially because the majority of my favorite films from 2019 weren't nominated for anything and I feel like I sacrificed seeing things I was actually interested in just to finish off the Oscar nominees.
