Just for some initial context 1917 takes place during Operation Alberich, the mass withdrawal of German forces to the Hindenburg/Siegfried Line. The goal being to form a deep defensive line that would wear down the numerically superior attacking allies in a war of attrition. As seen in the movie the Germans adopted a scorched earth policy for any territory they gave up, leaving nothing for the allies to use and making the crossing of these areas as difficult as possible. In the movie specifically we see trees chopped down, cows shot and trip wires in trenches. I’ve also read about more devious booby traps such as trip wires being attached to picture frames that are purposefully left crooked on a wall. The logic being that a common soldier would ignore this but an officer would be compelled to adjust the painting thus setting off the bomb. This deviousness combined with the knowledge that the Germans also poison all the wells in these areas leads me to one sad conclusion: The milk was poisoned. The presence of a full bucket of milk is too conspicuous in an area where everything else has been deliberately destroyed. Schofield does not drink enough for it to be fatal nor could we or he distinguish the effects of poisoning from the effects of everything else he goes through in the movie. The French woman and baby however were given a canteen full. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/31BUf0V
