The Lost City of Z is a fantastic film

I get that 2017 was a strong year for film, so this was overlooked- but I really think this film is fantastic. It's a haunting meditation on the themes of manhood, feelings of unworthiness and obsession. What compels Percy Fawcett to seek out Z? At first we're given the usual trope of wanting the prestigious status and rank that comes with succeeding in these expeditions. As the film slowly progresses this question is more deeply probed, and the answers are unsettling. The soundtrack that accompanies this question is restrained and poignant, opposed to the bombastic and grandiose tracks one would expect with an epic exploration film. The cinematography is good and feels dream like at times.Where the film really shines is the performances. Every performance is spot on. Charlie Hunman really proved himself with this one acting opposite Robert Pattinson. He conveys the quiet desperation of Fawcett very convincingly, this is easily his best performance thus far. Also Tom Holland has a nice role in the film too.Perhaps the film's downfall is that it cuts his expeditions into chunks. So we go back and fourth between the jungle to Britain, but I think this allows for the natural progression of time (film spans decades). I can understand why it would frustrate some people though.I found this film very compelling. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2ZiXkBV
