Jackie Brown Appreciation Post

I know a lot of people consider this to be one of his weaker movies, but I think even those people can agree the character Jackie Brown is one of the best characters Tarantino has ever had. In my personal opinion she's one of the best female characters in the entire scope of cinema.First of all from the opening scene you see her struggling just to keep up with her day to day life. She's getting older by the minute and can barely make ends meat. Pam Grier's acting is also incredibly relatable. I swear each time I see her on screen I see the same look my mom had as a single mother just trying to do her best taking care of me. She absolutely nails that look of being worn out uneasy about what's coming next. She's stuck in a world where men like Ordell and Ray Nicolette (Keaton's character) run the show and just use her as a means to an end.Everyone thinks she's too stupid or scared to make a move, and she uses that to her advantage. She's consistently the smartest person in the movie using the hubris of men in the world to her advantage. Jackie Brown took the lemons given to her and made lemonade. Important to note that she still managed to not feel jaded by these men in power and actually became friends with Max Cherry.Even better is that she wasn't portrayed as a woman who needed a man. While I personally think she loved Max, she and him were both willing to acknowledge that at this stage in life they just wanted different things and had to move on. It was bittersweet but realistic. Thankfully casting didn't choose some early 30's actress to portray her, they actually got an actress in her mid 40's to play her (although Grier is still beautiful in the movie).Female characters are so often portrayed as sex symbols who need a man to succeed, and while you could argue she needed Max Cherry to succeed I think the intent was to show you can't go through the world alone not necessarily that she needed a man specifically. Yet, Jackie Brown is a phenomenal character who is a strong independent woman that rises above her struggles even with the deck stacked against her as a middle aged black woman. This was done 20 years ago, and Grier and Tarantino's portrayal of Jackie Brown still hasn't been ripped for me. It's also on Netflix right now if anyone hasn't seen it.Sorry for any typos on mobile. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2ZzbluH
