Halloween 3 is without question the black sheep of the Halloween franchise primarily due to the lack of Michael Myers. From what I can tell, after Halloween 2 killed the character off, producers John Carpenter and Debra Hill intended the franchise to become an anthology with new movies following new stories, but due to the movie’s poor performance, the idea was scrapped and Myers returned in Halloween 4.That’s not to say Season of the Witch is a bad movie. In fact, I had a lot of fun with it! Sure, it has some weird moments, but I’m glad it’s become a cult film.To start, I love the mystery aspect of Season of the Witch with Dr. Dan Challis and Ellie Grimbridge going to the small town of Santa Mira to investigate the death of Ellie's father. The feeling that everybody in this town is in on some nefarious secret lingers everywhere. As a vagrant tells Challis, Silver Shamrock only gave jobs to the people they brought in.The plot is also quite unique with a successful Irish toy mogul yearning for Halloween to return to its ancient Celtic roots. How does he do it? By selling children masks that contain fragments of Stonehenge which makes bugs and snakes emerge from their dead carcasses after watching a commercial with a jingle so annoying it will be stuck in your head for days. I'm not joking that family death scene is chilling. Is this movie a masterpiece? No. Some things are pretty weird like how Silver Shamrock has these robot goons in suits who can rip your head off with zero issue. Sure, they're creepy and remind me of the androids from the Alien movies but I don't know if I really buy that concept in this kind of movie. Still the part at the end where it's revealed that Ellie is killed and replaced by an android is a tragic twist. Finally there's the ending. Even after seemingly foiling the evil toymaker's plot, the broadcast that will kill children is still going out at 9pm. After somehow convincing two TV channels to interrupt the broadcast (how was he able to do that?) one channel still manages to play the commercial while Dr. Challis pleads with the station to stop the broadcast. It then just ends. Does Dr. Challis succeed? Do all the children die? We know Dr. Challis' children had masks, did they die? Was Dr. Challis thrown in the looney bin? It's a shame Halloween 3 failed to click with people back in 1982 because I think it's a fun little horror movie. Sure, the movie still has its critics (watch Chris Stuckmann's review for a negative opinion on the movie) but I appreciate the risk Carpenter took with this movie, even if it didn't pan out as he intended. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3A7Rhkj
