So after I saw the news that Richard Donner had passed away, I decided now was the time to finally take Superman off the list. I was aware of the film's general popularity and always liked the theme tune by John Williams, so I went in knowing it was going to be somewhat of a solid flick.2 and a bit hours later, I'm really quite surprised. First of all, I knew the action scenes would have aged horribly, so I'm not judging any of the film on those. They were probably pretty good for the time, so hats off.The rest of the movie was very surprising in its tone. There were some very camp scenes, mainly involving Lex and Otis, but I really felt invested in Clark as a person and his alter ego. This speaks to Christopher Reeve's absolutely brilliant performance. I've seen Superman Returns and Man of Steel and neither Routh or Cavill come close to matching Reeve. As a viewer, you really are sold on the idea that they are two completely different people. One is completely floored by Lois Lane, yet Lois herself is floored by the other. It was really enjoyable to watch. The other aspect of the film I really enjoyed was its simplicity in explaining the conflict that Superman faces. You have one scene with Jor El and one scene with Johnathan Kent. That's it. Yet, towards the end when he's about to go back in time, he feels the conflict between the two yet still makes the decision. I wasn't at all confused as to why he did it or why the two 'Fathers' advised him the way they did.Compare that to Man of Steel where we have 2-3 scenes with a young Clark and Johnathan Kent. Those flashbacks are very enjoyable but now that I've seen how simply it can be done, I do ask myself did they need all that extra stuff in Man of Steel.Anyway, those were my thoughts on a film that has probably been discussed to death here! A really enjoyable film. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2UvmPS9
