Overlooked Movies: Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999)

Released in 1999 by director Michael Patrick Jann, this mockumentary follows the contestants of a teen beauty pageant in the small town of Mount Rose, Minnesota. Chaos and shenanigans ensue as the contestants prepare for the big competition.Drop Dead Gorgeous is a fantastic little comedy that's unfortunately not available to rent or stream anywhere. However, there is a Blu-Ray out there so if you're interested, definitely pick it up! It's a pure gem of a movie.First off is the cast. Kirstin Dunst, Denise Richards, Ellen Barkin, Brittany Murphy, Allison Janney, etc. They're all so great in these roles and they all have their little quirks that give them more personality. This is also the film debut of Amy Adams and she is just marvelous in this. It's just a supporting role, but you can tell she had potential to be a big name actress.I also love the movie's sense of humor. It's like Simpsons meets Parks & Recreation meets King of the Hill. There's just something about the quirks surrounding a small town that makes everything so relatable and hilarious. For example, the big "Welcome to Mount Rose" that greets people as they drive into town boasts that Mount Rose has the "oldest living Lutheran." Not only is that ridiculous enough, but the mayor comes in and says that the woman is dead and he keeps telling the "damn Shriners" to take down the sign but they never do. It's so funny but not outside the possibility that some small town in America would do actually something like this. Here's the clip because my description doesn't bring it justice. All in all, if you haven't seen Drop Dead Gorgeous, give it a watch. It's a very delightful movie. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3o1eqzA
