The Taking of Pelham 123 (1974)

This is a classic action thriller from 1974 and having seen a few ‘70s thrillers such as this by now, I can say that it’s a very unique experience watching them today. They have a very stripped-down, basic, almost laid-back feel that’s rather foreign to those used to modern action films. They also really aim for grounded realism that at best only kind of works due to how dated they can’t help but feeling. So, enough with the generalities. How’s this one? Pretty good. The script is well done, shifting between tense hostage scenes and comedy without ever feeling too jarring. Walter Matthau gives a nice performance that gives him a chance to do something more serious while also effectively utilizing his comedic background for some really amusing lines. The soundtrack, while being very of its time, is also quite nice, using ample horns and a steady but rapid beat to keep the tension going throughout. Also, on an unrelated side note, the final shot is kind of hilarious but I can’t really tell how intentional that is since it really does shift between tense and funny a lot.So overall, it’s a product of its time, but still an enjoyable watch today. It’s available for free with ads on YouTube if you care to watch. I’m actually planning on watching the remake on Netflix soon which is what prompted me to watch this one. For those who have seen both, how does the remake stack up to this one? via /r/movies https://ift.tt/33nl36q
