Mulan dishonored the Chinese culture and feminism(spoiler-free)

I just watched 30 mins of the movie, I'm already super offended as a woman, and as a Chinese. I'll go back to continue watching the movie after I post this.At the beginning of the movie, Mulan was acting like a boy and hate all girly things.Suppose the creators read the original folk poem of Mulan木兰诗, which should only take 10 mins. In that case, they should know Mulan she loved sewing. The first things she did after coming back from the army, was putting on a colorful dress, getting her hair done, and putting on the most trending makeup. As a girl myself, the least feminist thing in my mind is that some people always think girls have to be like boys to kickass. That's just not true. Girls can be beautiful, graceful, and still kickass!!!!! It's 2020, why the most feminist hero still has to act like a guy to be a hero !!!If the production team did a little research, they would know that China never had a culture, that women practice martial arts would be dishonest to the family and hard to get matchmaking.Similar to most of western culture, horses are expensive war supplies during almost the entire human history. Owning horses and know how to ride is a sign of elite family background(still is today). So practicing riding, shooting (archery), and hunting are always a popular activity among upper-class women. Also, as a confusion country, riding(early time as charioteering) and archery are among the 君子六艺(he Confucian Six Arts), its a horner to any Chinese, including women, to practice those. If the production team read a little bit of Chinese history, or watch any Chinese drama, they should know that lots of emperors' concubines and princesses are very good at riding and archery, including the famous Queen Wu Zetian(the only empress), her riding skill was one reason she was picked as the emperor's concubine.BTW, Mulan's family is definitely from the upper-class. Same as in western history, civilians do not get called to join the war, you have to at least be a knight to have your name on the emperors' conscription scroll. Not to mention the horse, armor, and sword are things ordinary people could never afford.Calling practice riding a dishonor to the family??? I don't know which parallel universes this movie is based on.The biggest problem with women's rights in Chinese history was the same as in the west history, and it's still the same in most places today, is the society doesn't teach girls there are many many options in their life. Some options might not sound a bit out of the line, but you can still go for it if it's your choice.Mulan is basically Cinderella with her parents still alive and loving her very much, just one day she chose to join the army instead of going to the palace. (Might not be the best example, but Cinderella riding the horse sense is stuck in my head).Mulan doesn't have a shitty family forcing her to do anything, she doesn't need to love the military from childhood, or practice her entire life to make things sound reasonable. In the original poem, Mulan has a younger brother. It's not her family was out of options. It's just a journey she choose to walk on. At one point in her life, she chooses to do that for her father, and she did it, that's it.One day she comes back, lives in whatever lifestyle she loves. it's just that simple. That's why the story was so strong and inspiring for thousands of years.Just a bit add on knowledge, China has tons of female generals in legend tales and in real history. Here I just list a few of them who really changed Chinese history book:Fu Hao(1200BC) Queen and highest commander of the country: https://ift.tt/3lMal1A Lu(18AD) Rebellion leader: https://ift.tt/3m2S0xA Xian(533-602AD) Military Strategist https://ift.tt/3lQWqaH Xiuyang(623AD)Princess and founding general of the Tang dynasty. She died in her 20s, was buried with a grand military funeral. https://ift.tt/3lQ7MeZ The place she stationed today still names 娘子关Lady's Pass. https://ift.tt/2QTYbFK Hongyu: https://ift.tt/3i1N0Xj Liangyu: https://ift.tt/32X14eI via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3jPdGv3
