Bowfinger (1999) is a wonderful movie

/r/movies loves to talk about "underrated gems", well I think I found one.We just watched Bowfinger (1999) last night and it was fantastic.Steve Martin as Bobby Bowfinger, a washed up movie director who never got his big break.Eddie Murphy as Kit Ramsey, a black action movie mega-star with paranoid delusions.Eddie Murphy also as a brace-faced nerdy loser that happens to look remarkably like Kit Ramsey.Heather Graham as a young actress with no illusions about how to get ahead.Christine Baranski as an over-the top past-her-prime theater actress that never quite made the big time.Bowfinger gets a great script and wants to cast action star Ramsey, but can't get him on-board. He decides to make the movie around Ramsey, having other actors bump into him on the street and make "found footage" movie without Ramsey's knowledge, pumping up Ramsey's paranoia and forcing some fantastic scenes as he slowly breaks down.Murphy's portrayal of the lookalike is incredible. This isn't a clumsy "Klumps" type second role. Without any makeup, Murphy is nearly unrecognizable as the truly loveable loser, Jiff.Bowfinger is biting in its commentary about the filmmaking process and hollywood in general. There is a thinly-veiled Scientology organization as the bad guy, lots of great bits about the casting couch, funding, schmooozing, hangers-on, and illegal immigrants. Also features Robert Downey Jr in a small role as another hollywood director.Did I mention that the movie they are making is a schlock sci-fi alien movie called "Chubby Rain"?Fun, biting, hilarious, heartwarming. High art? No. But definitely deserves more watches. The film has an 81% on the tomatometer, but only 61% audience score, which I think is criminal. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2xL1GIy
