Ran (1985) is the most visually beautiful story based film ever made imo

The title for most beautiful film of all time goes to The Fall (2006) - but it's not really about the story, it's just an excuse to showcase these colourful, incredible setpieces. But Kurosawa's masterpiece, Ran, is all about the story - but it's so well shot and filmed that it really makes you think about how wonderful cinema can be as a visual medium. The use of colour is sooo good. The scene that opens the movie - in the bright green meadow with the bright coloured samurai goes is really striking. I love the mountain backdrop and the ambient sound of birds - it's just a great way to set the stage with these peaceful images and sounds before the chaos starts. Then you have the big scene of the movie - the siege. This scene is a masterpiece - the greatest battle in all of cinema in my opinion. This is the first film to really get the frantic-ness of warfare right - and it inspired the Omaha Beach scene from Saving Private Ryan and the battles from LotR and GoT.But the Ran siege is something else - it has this little bit extra I can't quite put into words that makes it better than all the other battles. It's just this pure hellscape, it feels like a nightmare. The violence and smoke, combined with the unsettling music - it just becomes incredible to watch. The immersion never really ended during that scene. There are so many haunting images - Hidetora sat still as arrows fly past him and the tower burns, the two women killing each other, the shield of court goers being slaughtered. Then we have the final battle in the field - completely clear, the camera fully still. And all these bright primary colours shuffling around in the green like in the beginning. The final shot of the movie is also extremely haunting for me - after Lady Suè is beheaded, blind Tsurumaru walks along a ledge with his stick in the silence. Completely alone, dropping the Buddha scroll. It just leaves you with this incredible final image that makes you feel instead of think - because of this combination of sight and sound. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2TIrEDx
