Thoughts on Parasite (2019 - Vague and slightly spoiler territory.)

It’s been a hot minute since I walked out of the theater after seeing Bong Joon-Ho’s latest and possibly greatest.First off, yes, this is one of those films that does benefit greatly from going in as blind as possible. I suppose many of you will say that about any movie but in this case, it applies pretty strongly. That’s about as much as I will say about the plotting of it.I will also say that this is fresh out of just seeing it but I would rank this film as Bong Joon-Ho’s best work alongside The Host. To give some context of where my opinions are with his work in general, I quite liked Snowpiercer, but didn’t love it. The less said about Okja, the better. I don’t consider it an abject failure or anything like that but consider it a total misfire. I believe Bong Joon-Ho is at his best when working on a one-hundred percent Korean production and that is further strengthened by this film, Mother, Barking Dogs Don’t Bite, and of course The Host.Parasite sees Bong Joon-Ho revisit some familiar themes he’s explored combined with a near-mastery of his signature hybridization of clashing tones and genres in a confidently yet efficiently pace with his most clear and pointed work yet. Many comparisons have been made to a certain and significant film from this year. I can see why but even knowing what the film is in question will not really set up what to expect with this so if you do know, you’re safe. While I haven’t seen the other nominees for the Palme D’Or, this feels like the appropriate recipient and not as a consolation prize for South Korean cinema long ignored by recognized Western film prestige. There’s the movies and then there’s cinema and with this, I can guarantee you’re gonna be satisfied either way.Again I have just come out of seeing it and in an effort to not say what happens, I end with saying that this is possibly my top film of the year. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/34KPLX1
