I'm somewhat baffled that this film got so much praise. I just don't get it. It starts off as a schmaltzy Hallmark movie, then we get a PG version of the boot camp scene in Full Metal Jacket, and then there's the battle sequences that have more in common with Tropic Thunder than actual war movies. It's pythonesque.Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers went for a documentary-like approach to the combat scenes, while this goes for conventional action and spectacle filmmaking. And it might have worked if they'd had a budget to work with, because the effects look like absolute garbage. The gunfire is put in digitally in post, and so is most of the blood... It looks like The Expendables. It looks cheap and fake. A far cry from the sickening and medically accurate bloodshed seen in Spielberg's war pieces. And there is something to be said about the lack of profanity. Unbelievable. I read that Gibson chose to go PG-13 in terms of language so he wouldn't offend christians. Graphic violence and gore (if ridiculously phoney-looking) is absolutely fine, though. It's really interesting to read the reactions to the film on the official discussions page. The majority seemingly loved it, and a lot of people thought the battle sequences trumped Saving Private Ryan. It's honestly baffling to me. But maybe I'm missing something.A cheap TV-movie with schlock action bits. It's a shame it turned out like this, because the story of Desmond Doss is really interesting. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/31tF6NV
