Just got finished watching Edge of Seventeen for the first time. What I expected to be a run-of-the-mill high school comedy ended up being a really thoughtful and genuine film dealing with the isolation of adolescence, moving on from grief, and how both of these things affect family dynamics.All of the performances are fantastic, especially Hailee Steinfeld as the disillusioned smartass protagonist and Hayden Szeto as her soul-crushingly awkward friend. What I was super surprised by was writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig's insistence on making every single character as three-dimensional and complex as possible, even minor ones or ones that we're originally set up to hate. It would have been really easy to write this as a dumb coming-of-age comedy with stereotypical characters and call it a day. But every single character has believable motivations and actions that I empathized with. There wasn't a single moment where I thought to myself "Eh, I don't think that character would do/say that."Would highly recommend this one, especially if you're a kid who feels like you're going through a neverending, inescapable period of your life.
