Why is physical media for movies dying/regarded as obsolete when it's so much superior to streaming in terms of quality?

Physical media is a much superior product to streaming in terms of quality.1080p Blu-Ray has been out for 15 years. I could buy a brand new 1080p Blu-Ray right now, as we speak, and it would play perfectly fine on my PS3. It's not a young format. And yet, the 1080p Blu-Ray is better than most 4K streams. Not all, but most. 1080p Blu-Ray runs at aroung 20-40 mbps (it obviously varies depending on how old the Blu-Ray is, the quality of the transfer etc., but that's the general estimate). 4K streams I think usually hover around the mid to lower 20's or 10's. Now, with 1080p streaming, no comparison. Blu-Ray is vastly superior here. Now as we move on to 4K Blu-Ray, it blows streaming apart. First of all, it displays the image in a resolution of up to 4K, which already sets it apart from every single 1080p stream ever. Bitrate wise, it's light years ahead of even the best 4K streams. Obviously, it depends on the quality of the disc. Say, Disney clearly treats physical as an afterthought of an afterthought. They are focused on theatrical releases and their streaming service. Their discs still outperform their online equivalents, but not as much as you would want them to. Now, with companies that still treat their physical releases at least mildly seriously, there is no comparison. The LotR 4K Edition frequently hits 80 mbps, while its Netflix 1080p equivalents run at... less than 10 mbps. That's INSANE. Jonh Carpenter's The Thing has recently gotten a 4K release, and it apparently averages about 86 mbps. That's mind blowing.I truly don't get it. 4K is slowly starting to become a standard. If you are buying a new TV in 2021, then, unless you are EXTREMELY budget limited, or it's for your grandparents etc., it will almost certainly be 4K. Like, wouldn't you want to ACTUALLY exploit your TV's capabilities regarding HDR and 4K resolution, instead of just watching a compressed stream which is most likely 1080p (though many streaming services have been starting to introduce 4K, which is nice, but it's still very compressed 4K)?I really don't see why physical media is being treated as obsolete when it's so much better in terms of quality than streaming. I am not especially tech savvy, in fact I would say I am below average, and yet it appears obvious to me how much superior physical remains. Why? Why do most people act like physical is just totally obsolete and useless? via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3BtwIAs
