Honest question: how the HELL did critics at the time NOT realize that Starship Troopers was a satire?

You know, the kickass action flick with explicitly fascistic themes down to the propaganda, literal history lessons, aryan protagonists and god damn SS Uniforms being worn by one of the leads that was directed by PAUL VERHOEVEN, the SAME dude who did Robocop! You know, Robocop, that kickass action movie which was also a scathing satire of early 80s American exceptionalism and the individualistic, capitalist Reagan era culture down to games about nukes and corporations selling hearts and privatizing the police force while literally seeking to sabotage the working class AND literally dehumanize a public servant in order to turn him into an ideal tool which would never turn against its corporate overlords?I mean, these are smart people. These are brilliant critics. They are familiar with satire. They knew Verhoeven very well. He had been shitting all over American myths of virtuous violence for over a decade by then. And they still took it at face value? It's not a rhetorical question. I know you guys know movies. Some of you might even be into making movies. Just help me explain how on that one particular occasion the entire world became blind, deaf and dumb to the true message of the film?Thank you via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3lVkOKd
