- It was the boogeyman.- As a matter of fact, it was.John Carpenter is a genius. I love the atmosphere in this movie. The feeling of Halloween night in a small town. And the suspense is never ending. Even in the scenes where characters are just talking on the phone, the camera often shows something eerie in the background, for example a pitch-black room. Simple, but so effective. This leads to the great pay off towards the end when Laurie finds her friends dead and the Shape appears from that spot in the background we've been teased with during the movie. And then the character of Dr. Loomis. He lends just enough exposition to give us an idea of what they're dealing with. What exactly is Michael Myers? Loomis says he is basically evil personified, a man without conscience or sense of right or wrong. But still a human being in a physical sense. This makes us wonder until the very end when Michael vanishes after being shot six times. And then a montage of locations where he's been while breathing is heard in the background. Then you realise Michael Myers is something else. Not human. Just something else. And that's all you need to know. Gives me the creeps every time. Easily my favorite horror movie of all time.
