MovieModsRecommend - Wit

We mods are in this subreddit daily and know the users feel like the same movies are talked about way too often. The most popular movies on Reddit are certainly some great ones, but every week we're going to recommend what we think are good movies and aren't discussed much in this subreddit. These recommendations aren't all pretentious film school meditations on human verisimilitude, we swear they're watchable :)February 12, 2021 is Wit - 2001. I recommend, again, skipping a trailer and just watching this scene.. I can't watch it without the eyes watering, there's so much to digest it's overwhelming to think about. Of course if you put Arvo Pärt- Spiegel im Spiegel on a cereal commercial I might tear up too.I know we just did The Sweet Hereafter and I promise they're not all gut punches of sadness, but this movie is amazing and it has to be mentioned. The basic premise: A renowned professor is forced to reassess her life when she is diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer.Boring as hell premise, right? Yeah I agree. Sounds like some pretentious meditation about blah blah and I'm sure if you sat down and forced yourself to watch it, it might be good but it's just a lot of effort. I know, I get it. It's probably the least accessible movie I've listed, I'm aware. I'm recommending it anyway, because you'll be thankful that you watched it. The movie is a crash course in existentialism, mind vs body, and afterwards you can claim you demand only the best punctuation with your Holy Sonnets. The movie is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning play of the same name, a critique on cancer treatment in the United States, metaphysical poetry, and coming to terms with one's focus in life.If you watched the YouTube link above you'll notice they jump around in time and location, as the story is primarily told by Emma Thompson while she's in the hospital. It wasn't a theatrical movie, it was actually an HBO film. Nevertheless, Ebert said it was one of his favorites of 2001. Mike Nichols directed it, the guy who did The Graduate, Closer, Charlie Wilson's War, The Remains of the Day, and Who's Afraid of the Virginia Wolf?Where you can watch it onlineIf you're wondering where you heard that song before, it's also in the Gravity trailer. Please use spoiler tags in the discussion below, as this is a recommendation thread for people who haven't seen the movie yet. If you have a suggestion for a future recommendation, please post here with it!The MovieModsRecommend Archive via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3qr8zFj
