On the infamous "Martha" scene in BvS and Synder's approach to writing

I'm actually surprised to see people still defending it. I honestly just saw a comment saying that "it's only mocked because 80% of people don't understand it". Like its some deep complex scene that incredibly subtle. The issue is the scene would have actually been fine if the line was "Save my Mother" instead. It'd communicate the point (Batman seeing Superman as a living person) without the incredibly cheesy coincidence of their mothers sharing the same name.I know he gets ragged on a lot, but it's just so indicative of Synder's approach to the DCEU. Trying so hard to present itself as deep and clever, without any real substance behind it. It echoes other awful decisions made for BvS.> Jimmy Olsen is seen as too dorky for this "gritty adult superhero" flick so he gets executed at the very beginning. Whats meant to be taken as a statement of maturity reads as a lame "This ain't your momma's Superman story".> Lex Luther isn't a calculating business man, he's a millennial Zuckerburg internet mogul. It's meant to "reflect the real world" but does it improve the character? No, not at all- makes him less threatening and the character loses his essence.> Similarly, the Joker is portrayed as an LA gangbanger. That wasn't a great alternative mature take on the character, it reads as a desperate attempt to make him "cool".> Batman killing people. Don't really need to elaborate on this, just its once again ignoring the foundations of who the character is because it's "cooler" for him to do it.This shouldnt have been a surprise either. While I know people like the Watchmen adaptation, when you look at the original changes Synder made to the material, you see this pattern from day one. The superheroes are give super strength; Rorshach is portrayed more heroically; the squids are seen as "too silly" and removed despite the finale hinging on the earth uniting against an alien threat; excess slow motion is overused, breaking the flow of fight scenes, cause its "cool", etc.I'm not trying to shit on the guy, or even DC (Batman is my favourite superhero character), but the dude is really put on the pedestal. It's like he's making films for people embarrassed about liking superheroes. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/399zwWr
