2020 films ranked according to the /r/movies official discussion polls.

Had a few people asking for this in modmail so I figured I'd sticky it to ring in the new year.Every week we post official discussions for widely released movies and attach a poll to each asking users to both rank the movies from 1-10 and whether or not they'd recommend them. Those polls get compiled into the yearly list and the all time list every so often.Last year was obviously tumultuous when it came to film releases. We tried the best we could to keep up with the many streaming releases despite most of them making few waves. It was an odd year of seemingly more movies and less interest. Regardless, I think this method is one of the best we have for figuring a list for this sub. Sometimes we do Top 250 of all time voting threads but that uses the reddit voting system which is imperfect to say the least. I like this method because each movie is voted on individually by the people who saw it, generally speaking. So without further adieu, here are some stats from this year's polls. Check the bottom of the post for a link to the full results.RankFilm TitleMean ScoreNumber of Votes1Portrait of a Lady on Fire9.231,2772Wolfwalkers9.09943Hamilton9.041.9064David Byrne's American Utopia9.02525Small Axe: Mangrove8.74426Small Axe: Lover's Rock8.73377Soul8.615,1228Sound of Metal8.584419Palm Springs8.512,72810Promising Young Woman8.51252Much like rotten tomatoes, the less seen but high quality movies tend or movies with highly niche audiences tend to do well with this system because most likely only people who want to see them are seeing them.If you don't want to consider Hamilton and American Utopia movies then the next two spots would go to The Gentlemen and Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe. Here are some more stats from the poll:The most voted on film was unsurprisingly Wonder Woman 1984 which pulled in 18,578 votes and averaged a 4.93 score. This almost doubles the second most voted on film, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm which pulled 9,819 votes and landed at a 7.8.The lowest scoring movie was Artemis Fowl at an average score of 2.37 with 769 votes.Obviously number of votes went down once theaters closed. Most of the theater releases like Birds of Prey, The Gentlemen, Onward, and Tenet pulled in >1,000 votes. As for streaming releases, most Netflix releases pulled in over 1,000 votes such as Extraction, I'm Thinking of Ending Things, The Old Guard, Devil All the Time, Eurovision, Enola Holmes, and Da Five Bloods. Even Horse Girl pulled in 1,500. Surprisingly, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom only pulled 231 votes.Hulu did alright as well with King of Staten Island and Palm Springs getting over 1,000 votes. Third place for Hulu goes to Happiest Season with 595 votes.Amazon Prime as far as I can tell doesn't pull in as many votes with the exception of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm which was the second most voted on film. Despite this, they got three films in our top ten.Mank only pulled in 506 votes which was both on Netflix and directed by /r/movies darling David Fincher.Don't believe me?Link to the resultsAnd here are the ranked results of every poll we've ever done, dating back to 2017 via /r/movies https://ift.tt/386JuIS
