Don’t get me wrong, Little Nicky is a very stupid and annoying movie. Sandler’s lead character isn’t his most lovable and many of the jokes are so juvenile that it really takes patience to get through certain scenes. That being said, the plot of the movie is two of Satan’s sons are mad at their dad for not handing Hell over to them, so they go to Earth to basically dominate and destroy the planet. This causes Satan to begin deteriorating and the gates of Hell to freeze, making it impossible for anyone to get in. The only way to save Satan, Earth, and the gates of Hell is for Satan’s other son, Nicky, to go to Earth and trap his brothers in a flask. This is a bizarre plot for a movie. I felt like I got stoned typing all of that out. It could have fallen apart easily, but everyone involved truly commits to the insanity which makes some of these odd choices admirable.People always lump this in with Sandler’s worst - Jack and Jill, Grown Ups, Pixels, etc. - but it was more ambitious than any of those movies. This movie was released when Sandler was at the top of Hollywood. The Wedding Singer, The Waterboy, and Big Daddy all came out right before this, each one making more money than the last. He was one of the hottest movie stars in the world. He decided to use all of this fame to make a weird movie about Satan’s son. All of the other terrible Sandler movies I mentioned are him trying to get an easy paycheck. Little Nicky doesn’t feel like that. It feels like Sandler really going for it, for better or worse. It was so off putting that it bombed, forcing him to begin making the most generic comedies known to man. Because of this movie’s financial failure, we got many of his shitty comedies. That’s a shame because Little Nicky feels more like his true sense of humor than The Longest Yard or Just Go With It.And yes, many of the jokes are terrible, but the ones that work are HILARIOUS. They really have the surreal spirit of Sandler’s early comedy albums. Jon Lovitz as a horny piece of shit and the entire scene at the Globetrotter’s game never fail to make me chuckle.Anywho, Little Nicky deserves way more credit for being so ambitious in its stupidity. I understand why many hate it, but I think they should lighten up and appreciate it for its originality.Alright, I’m going to go hide in a bunker because I am about to get roasted in the comments. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3a49AgY
