A few thoughts on Project Power, as well as the screenwriter's next super-hero movie: The Batman

For those of you unaware, Project Power is a Netflix film that just released this past Friday. It stars Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I'll keep this as spoiler lite as possible. The central premise reads like something you'd expect to see on writing prompts-- a new drug is circulating the streets that gives people super powers for 5 minutes at a time.Sounds cool, right? Well there are about 6 powers introduced and all of them are incredibly dull and used with zero creativity. This could have been a moment for the writer to shine akin to how One Piece handles Paramecia powers, but nope. The bulletproof guy just rushes into cannon fodder, the super strength guy just breaks doors, the fire guy just lights himself on fire. The movie also spends a good time building up how Jamie Foxx's power is super destructive and he'd rather not use it, but then in a vital scene he does so with no repercussion to the good guys.JGL is an amazing actor, but he basically plays a complete cliche of a "loose canon" cop that breaks protocol and there's even a scene where his chief asks him for his badge and gun. The main villain of the movie is incredibly boring and evil for the sake of being evil (as well as getting richer despite apparently owning a giant ship-- not even a yacht, and actual cargo ship with hundreds of henchmen). The heroes also never feel like they are in peril, they just waltz into the den of the bad guys and casually take hundreds of them down, even the powered up ones.Anyway, the reason I bring this up is because the screen writer is the same as the new Batman film. This is his first big debut and it's super cheesy. If The Batman is anything even remotely close to it, we'll be regressing to the Schumacher era of "Do you know what killed the dinosaurs?"Edit: Removed anything that might lead to post getting deleted again. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2CtMbak
