I just re-watched this movie again, and I absolutely love this movie. The film is dramatic and emotional, but is also absolutely hilarious. The main character of the film is Nadine Franklin (portrayed by Hailee Steinfeld), a seventeen year old girl who has tensions with her mother and brother after the death of her beloved father four years previously. Throughout the film, she breaks off her friendship after her best friend starts dating her brother, she meets an awkward guy who has a crush on her, engages in witticisms with her teacher Mr. Bruner (portrayed by a scene-stealing Woody Harrelson), and struggles with her crush on a “bad boy.” Despite not being a teenage girl, I rooted for Nadine and felt extremely relatable and sympathetic despite her being heavily flawed and making pretty terrible choices. All of this is a testament to Steinfeld’s excellent performance, because while the supporting cast is terrific, without Steinfeld the movie would not work nearly as well. She has chemistry with everyone on screen and this definitely put her on my radar as an actress. (That phone scene is absolutely terrifying; I had my mouth open.)The only problems I would say I have with the movie are the love interest, Erwin: he was charming and had chemistry with Steinfeld, but I didn’t love him being rich and muscular. I understand it was to defy her stereotypical first impression of him, but it seemed like a weird choice to me. I also feel like the best friend was shuffled to the side a little bit in the second half of the movie, and could have been a bit more involved. But, otherwise, HIGHLY recommended. The movie is on YouTube and is also on Netflix. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2QFx8P4
