And I was fucking gobsmacked by it. This movie truly feels like an epic in every sense of the word. I’ve seen many refer to this as Scorsese’s ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA and yeah, I see that. This is perhaps the most emotional Scorsese movie I’ve seen, and I was tearing up at many points. Specifically the last third of the film. It’s a film that knows the time its stars has is limited. I mean, they’re all getting pretty up there in age.It truly is an elegy for the gangster film. Not that this is purely a GANGSTER film, but it feels like Scorsese reflecting on his own filmography. It’s akin to putting the toys away after one last little go-round. It’s somber, it’s funny, and it’s quite beautiful. One problem I can see many having is the runtime. It’s fucking long. It’s uncompromisingly long. But it feels necessary. And, you know what? I’m glad. I’d like to think Scorsese went to Netflix and was like, “This will be 3.5 hours.” And they said, “Can you trim even 5 minutes off?” To which Scorsese replied, “No, fuck you.”Beyond all that.. just everyone is so fucking good in this. Specifically Pacino and Pesci, who deliver performances that WILL garner Oscar buzz. Just so fucking sublime. Pesci, despite his little acting hiatus, doesn’t miss a single beat. I’m so fucking glad Scorsese finally got him to agree to this. Also, side-note, the CGI is actually quite good. Of course, there’s so iffy parts and it definitely takes some getting used to. But I was thoroughly impressed by it and especially how it’s used.Would love to hear other user’s thoughts. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/36sADON
