I've seen my fair share of Vietnam movies: Platoon, The Deer Hunter, Go Tell the Spartans. But none affected me as badly as "Full Metal Jacket" and oddly enough, it wasn't the scene set in Nam which shocked me, it was the boot camp scenes with R. Lee Ermey's Sergeant Hartman instructing his recruits in a brutal and sadistic manner. While his harsh treatment is understandably necessary as he's training his men into having survival skills, I kept wondering how Gomer Pyle got in when it is apparent he's unequipped and then is forced to endure the abuse from his colleagues because whenever he messes up, his colleagues pay for it.Vincent D'Onofrio was amazing as Gomer Pyle. The way he starts out as a slow innocent to his descent into madness is devastating to watch. I also thought Ermey put the fear of God in us viewers. Matthew Modine as the lead is quite endearing which is why when he does unseemly things, it's a sad outcome. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2q053Yn

» "Full Metal Jacket": The horrifying first half made me terrified of ever serving the army. How did "Gomer Pyle" even pass the examination board?
