Mild spoilers.I watched his movie a few nights ago and haven't been able to get it off my mind.I'll start by admitting the plot of this movie is nothing new. It's the same "grizzled veteran/hitman has to rescue 13 year old girl" you've seen in Man on Fire, Taken, Logan, The Professional, etc.What really makes this movie stand out is the way it portrays violence. When you think of a movie that's heavy on violence you tend to think of something like Tarantino, where the violence is cinematic, over the top, and glamorous. You Were Never Really Here deals with violence in the opposite way. The few "action" scenes are deliberately un-cinematic. They are brief, plain, and presented with no fanfare, often even obscured or off screen entirely. There are no quips, no slow motion shots, no backflips, no fancy choreography, no swelling orchestral score as the hero delivers the villain's timely comeuppance.What we do see is everything else but that. The preparation, the planning, the aftermath, the way the protagonists actions and his past weigh heavily on his soul. In any R rated action movie the villain's death is karmic, cathartic, and makes you want to pump your fists and high five. In this movie it makes you sick. His realization of what happened is gut wrenching. The way they treat violence so seriously made me question my reaction to glamorized violence in other movies. It feels so much more real and visceral than any other movie I can recall.If you're looking for a movie where Joaquin Phoenix knocks it out of the park playing a man struggling with mental problems and violent tendencies and lives with his mother you have options this weekend. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2OuzyzF
