Tom Hanks' 'A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood' - Review Thread

It's A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood premiered at TIFF last night and reviews have started to come out. Everyone is really giving high praise to Tom Hanks' performance as Mr. Rogers, saying he nailed it. Looks like he'll be a lock for a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Oscars (and most likely the favorite for a win). Some have criticized the script but no major complaints. Looks like the biopic to beat for this year.Rotten Tomatoes Score: 100% - 9.09 Average Rating - 6 ReviewsRotten Tomatoes Critics Consensus:N/AMetacritic Score: 82/100 - "Universal Acclaim" - 6 ReviewsThe Playlist - Ella Kemp“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” reminded me of how one person’s words can change the world. How their feeling, or at least their intense and sincere understanding of someone else’s, can save a life. This might be just one little movie, and one of so many reviews – but people like Mister Rogers and Marielle Heller exist to make life feel like you’re part of something so much bigger. [A+]Variety - Own GleibermanA Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is a soft-hearted fable that works on you in an enchanting way. Tom Hanks channels Mister Rogers — not just the mannerisms, but the mysterious inner spirit — in a drama about how the legendary children's TV host saves a magazine writer, and could maybe save the rest of us.IndieWire - Eric KohnTom Hanks Was Born to Play Mister Rogers. Marielle Heller mines intelligent observations and storytelling twists from the ultimate sentimental subject. This sweet, unassuming movie has deeper sensibilities lurking beneath its surface, just like Rogers himself.Screen International - Wendy IdeIt’s as cosy as Mr Rogers’ trademark zip-up cardigan, but the sweetness of this film about the beloved US children’s television personality is tempered by the inventive eccentricity of its approach.Hollywood Reporter - Todd MacarthyMarielle Heller's film itself, however, is a rather more modest achievement, sympathetic and yet entirely predictable in its dramatic trajectory of making a believer of an angry, cynical journalist.TheWrap - Steve PondA Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood finds a gentle state of grace and shows the courage and smarts to stay in that zone, never rushing things or playing for drama. Mr. Rogers Film Is a Sweet Miracle.Plot:An award-winning cynical journalist, Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys), grudgingly accepts an assignment to write an Esquire profile of the beloved television icon Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks). Vogel's perspective on life is transformed after his encounter with Rogers.Director:Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Diary of a Teenage Girl)Release Date:November 22, 2019Starring:Tom HanksMatthew RhysSusan Kelechi WatsonChris CooperEnrico ColantoniMaryann PlunkettRuntime:107 Minutes via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2HULgPG
